On this day, 15 February 2004, rioting broke out in the Sydney suburb of Redfern, Australia, following the death of Thomas “TJ” Hickey, a 17 year old Aboriginal Australian, the previous day.
Hickey’s family and the local community claim that he was being chased by a police vehicle when his bicycle was either clipped by the vehicle or crashed and he was killed after being impaled on a fence. Police claim they just happened to be driving by when a freak bike accident occurred, to widespread disbelief. But officers did lift Hickley off the fence, which goes against standard first-aid practices as it can cause people to bleed to death.
Around 100 people, mostly Aboriginal young people, but with some other supporters, angry at the death and police harassment in general, took to the streets and attacked officers with rocks, petrol bombs and fireworks.
Clashes continued until the following morning. Many subsequent protests were also held demanding justice, and the dropping of charges against those arrested during the riots. https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1350309895154157/?type=3

On this day, 21 March 1937, the Ponce massacre occurred when police killed 19 people on a peaceful demonstration and wounded hundreds in Puerto Rico. They were marching for the release of imprisoned separatist leader Albizu Campos. Police acted on the orders of the US-appointed governors, and after the murders staged photos with a press photographer to try to claim self defence. Food Not Bombs (Dundee chapter)

Food Not Bombs is a loosely organised worldwide network of volunteers dedicated to changing our society. The amount of money spent by governments on weapons of war could feed the hungry many, many times over, but instead, it is spent on violence, creating yet more hunger. Meanwhile the capitalist system our food is produced in results in vast quantities of perfectly edible, good food being thrown out, rather than eaten, despite the many people who need it.

Food Not Bombs Dundee is dedicated to taking action around issues of capitalism, food waste, poverty, hunger, militarism and speciesism that affect our society, as well as to supporting local activist and community groups in their intersecting struggles for social justice. We also support protests, strikes and other events with food. If you’d like to collaborate, get in touch.

1. The food is always vegan and free to everyone without restriction, rich or poor, stoned or sober.
2. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders or headquarters, and every group is autonomous and makes decisions using the consensus process.
3. We believe in solidarity, not charity.

Food Not Bombs aims to provide a radical counter-narrative to the current political and economic system by building our own sustainable and cooperative communities, demonstrating that we can replace the current violent and abusive system with one of cooperation, equality and abundance in very practical ways. We believe that sharing free food without restriction and expectations, and working in solidarity with those who we share our food with, is a revolutionary act in a culture that is devoted to profit and consumerism.

Remember these names. If you see these names, shit is about to go down. Any organization that allows these people to soeak at their event is either very ignorant or willfully platforming a massive transphobe.
These are horrible people. They lie, they publish bad ‘research’, they promote abusive therapies. They have all been discredited a thousand times yet they continue to get invited by media and conferences desperate for a transphobic ‘expert’ to hide their bigotry behind.

*Blair White doesn’t claim to be a scientist so if you count transphobic pseudo-scientists, yeah it’s literally five people

Shield with King Tutankhamun Slaying His Enemies

Among the military equipment found in the tomb of Tutankhamun were eight shields, four of which are ceremonial and are of openwork wood, incised and gilded.

On this shield, a winged sun disk curves around the top, protecting the king who is shown with a scimitar in one hand and holding two lions by their tails in his other hand. The lions symbolize the enemies of Egypt.

Behind the king, the vulture goddess, Nekhbet, spreads out her wings for the king’s protection. Below, a band of decoration suggests the mountains of the desert.

From the Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 61576
