Changing our behaviors can feel like a monumental task. We pressure ourselves to go big or go home. Not surprisingly, these big expectations are often unrealistic, and that’s a recipe for disappointment and self-criticism.

Instead, we should think small — as in tiny behaviors that can become habits. The idea is to make these behavior changes so small that they’re easy to do, according to BJ Fogg, a behavior scientist at Stanford University and author of the new book Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything.

“It’s easier to create habits and change than most people think, and it’s faster than most people think,” Fogg says. “It can even be fun, if you do it in the right way.”

On this day, 27 February 1973, armed Native American activists occupied Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in protest against tribal corruption and the continuing failure of the US government to fulfil treaties they signed with Indigenous people. Choosing the site of the 1890 massacre of Native Americans by US troops, they held out for 71 days, frequently exchanging fire with government forces and suffering casualties, some fatal.
Though eventually broken, the occupation galvanised huge support for the American Indian Movement, famously including Marlon Brando’s boycott of that year’s Oscars, instead sending an Apache actor in his place to collect his best actor award, who delivered a speech about Wounded Knee to reporters backstage after she was threatened with arrest for speaking on the podium.
This book gives a good overview of 500 years of Indigenous resistance in the Americas: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/books/products/500-years-of-indigenous-resistance-gord-hill https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1360815057436974/?type=3

Antagonizing racists in person is so much more satisfying than saying anything to they stupid asses online.

This happened right here in sunny Gainesville, Florida, city of trees, city of magic. And it was beautiful.

So Dick Spencer is holding his little speaking event at the University of Florida as part of his little 2017 college tour. Like the entire town came out to give him hell about it.

This picture was taken at a bullshit angle; the auditorium was actually more than half empty. Of the people who were there, only the two front rows were actually there for the speech. Everybody else who came, came there to heckle. And heckle they did! This was just one heckle out of several hours of non-stop abuse hurled at that man. He gave about a quarter of a speech, cried on stage (on stage he was, crying), and left the event an hour early so he could sneak out of town.

And here’s what you need to understand: Dude brought a lot of friends with him, and we’d spotted strangers casing the Black and Jewish and working-class parts of town for a couple days prior, and nobody knew what to expect on the day of. On the day, I was pulling security at the infoshop downtown, and this was back when I was working overnights, so when my relief came I went and took a nap in the storage closet, 200% expecting that somebody was gonna wake me up to tell me there were boneheads trying to break down the door or something.

Instead, I woke up to laughter, because they’d set up the projector and were playing the livestream of Dick Spencer breaking down and crying on stage at his own event.

That afternoon, though, the “What about the memes??” guy did try to shoot my friends, so, y'know, not at all fun and games.

With supporters calling it more than 100 years in the making, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Wednesday that makes lynching a federal hate crime for the first time in U.S. history.

The Emmett Till Antilynching Act was approved in a vote of 410-4. Three Republicans and one independent representative voted against it.

Advocates say there have been more than 200 attempts to pass the legislation in the past, and the latest effort has been in the works for nearly two years.

“This act of American terrorism has to be repudiated,” Illinois Democrat Bobby Rush, who sponsored the legislation nearly two years ago, told NPR. And “now it’s being repudiated. It’s never too late to repudiate evil and this lynching is an American evil.”

Gotta thank him for this, even though it’s the bare minimum. I wasn’t watching during this comment so I wonder what the audience reaction was

The bar is low

Believe me, I know. I’m just starving for some decent foreign policy takes 😞
