I am American and I have never seen photos like this. I had no idea there are borders like this. Even though I LOVE the idea of open borders, I am staring at these pictures like “wait…people can just…walk across some stones or grass and BE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY??? and nobody stops them?? how does that WORK?!” So you can tell that my country’s propaganda has gotten to me by convincing me that this CAN’T work even though…it…obviously can.

These pics just seem unreal to me. I’ve been taught my whole life that this can’t exist. In 27 years no one has ever sat me down and gone, look, here’s how it is elsewhere. It isn’t impossible at all.

French person here and where I live right now? I can take a walk and end up in Belgium by accident without even realizing it. Not kidding, when I first moved here, I took a small walking path and quickly ended up on a road I’d never seen before. I hadn’t taken my phone because I didn’t expect to be out for long (and even like that my walk lasted barely one hour). To make sure I wouldn’t get lost, I asked for directions and followed the road.

The next thing I knew, a “Bienvenue en Belgique/France” sign was in front of me. I had walked into Belgium without noticing and the man I asked for directions didn’t even blink when I asked for a French village. Because it’s that normal here.

The idea of taking this kind of walk and ending up in front of armed lines is terrifying to me and I’m so sorry that it’s what some people are used to.

The fact that you didn’t get detained or even questioned blows my mind.

The more I learn about the rest of the world, the more I realize why our education is so shitty here: they don’t want us to know how bad it really is.

I once took a ride on a bike to visit my ex from Germany, I live so close to there

Here’s some other pics from the borders of Europe:

It is irresponsible to decontextualize “open borders” between European Union countries when increasingly the external borders of the EU are becoming militarized and enforced, to the extent that countries are now criminalizing and attempting to prosecute NGO rescue operations to save drowning people in the Mediterranean, accusing rescuers of being people smugglers. In the background at an institutional level, the EU makes disastrous deals with Turkey and Libya in order to capitulate to right wing anti-migrant sentiment at the expense of human lives and commitment to the right of asylum. In 2019, nearly 1100 people drowned trying to cross to Europe. In the first 6 weeks of 2020, 99 people have already died.

I don’t say this to lecture anyone, but it is an extreme misrepresentation of the situation to discuss “open borders” in Europe and remove it from the broader reality where these borders are violently enforced - directly by police or militaries and indirectly by policy - against certain “categories” of people. I don’t think this discussion can be had without understanding who is excluded and why. These pictures represent a false image of a free world that falls apart when examined even a bit critically.

The western world consistently militarizes its borders in order to maintain its control over who has access to its resources, whether that border is in the desert between Arizona and Mexico or the sea between Italy and Libya.

My plan for Solarpunk Action Week currently is:

  • Really concentrate on my solarpunk themed post series
  • Try to set up a mushroom farm
  • Make and leave origamis for people to find in random places
  • Make some Solarpunk party decorations (May Day is approaching!)
  • Clean the balcony and prepare it for gardening season
  • Snitch Borrow a food dehydrator from parents and dehydrate some vegetables
  • Make a solarpunk tunic and maybe pants
  • Knit a scarf for okapi statue in the middle of the neighborhood
  • Begin the journey of building a neighborhood community
  • Solarpunk themed stickers!
  • Mend some clothes

I’m fairly sure I can’t achieve even half of these, but planning is half of the fun : >

okay i didn’t know mushroom farms could exist this is important

My plan essentially consists of keeping mushrooms (portobello or shiitake) on a paper towel for a while then getting a storage box, tossing some stuff in it (coffee grounds? Soil? Something?), planting hopefully spore covered towel, watering the soil and towel, putting the lid on, putting the whole thing in kitchen cupboard and hoping for the best 😂

I should do something for this. I’m thinking maybe putting up some IWW agitprop, helping my friend with the garden at the catholic workers house, and starting a compost bucket. I live in an apartment and don’t have a use for the compost, but my friend wants to use it in her garden and to help the local insect population

Clearview has shrouded itself in secrecy, avoiding debate about its boundary-pushing technology. When I began looking into the company in November, its website was a bare page showing a nonexistent Manhattan address as its place of business. The company’s one employee listed on LinkedIn, a sales manager named “John Good,” turned out to be Mr. Ton-That, using a fake name. For a month, people affiliated with the company would not return my emails or phone calls.

While the company was dodging me, it was also monitoring me. At my request, a number of police officers had run my photo through the Clearview app. They soon received phone calls from company representatives asking if they were talking to the media — a sign that Clearview has the ability and, in this case, the appetite to monitor whom law enforcement is searching for.

I’m ready to shove this guy into an industrial crusher

I just want to point out, that first quote? About how there’s too much information moving around with modern technology to ensure people’s privacy? That’s true. There will always be scammers, surveillance, tracking, targeted ads, botnets, etc. as long as the tech still works and people are incentivized to do it

The only solution is to remove the profit motive that makes exploiting other people worthwhile. Redistributing wealth won’t fix it. UBI won’t fix it. God knows we’ve tried to regulate this shit, but even though a lot of it is illegal already it’s still happening all the time. Nevermind that companies like google, amazon, and facebook are very much motivated to lobby against any attempts at privacy regulations

The only solution to these problems (and many more! junk mail, for instance) is to stop letting people profit off of our exploitation. We need a radical change in our economic system. Otherwise, I hope you’re happy with never answering unfamiliar phone numbers again

Approximately two weeks after purchasing a $200 dehumidifier and notifying the landlord that the mold problem in our apartment has grown out of control, we were served papers informing us that our lease is not being renewed.

We are currently exploring legal assistance, but we have to get out of here. The dehumidifier has worked a miracle, but the mold is still a very present concern, and even if the landlord was renewing our lease, we’d be in need of new housing.

The problem is that we live in poverty! Hooray!

tl;dr, we’re a household of four disabled trans people in desperate need of housing that isn’t hazardous to our health.

Why do you feel that violence is ever the answer it should be a last resort and only used when all else is failed. If you were less violent you would probably have normal everyday people join and not just extremely far far left people

Dear Totally Real Tumblr User Who Is Not In Any Way A Far Right Bot Or Troll Even Though Their Tumblr Consists Solely Of One Re-Blog Made This Month,

(pictured: artist’s illustration of irishsugartits)

First of all, violence is pretty much always the last resort used by anti-fascists, when all else fails and the threat of fascist violence to their communities is still present.  And by “violence” we mean self-defence.

Anti-fascists don’t really like to have to physically defend their communities, which is why probably 99% of anti-fascist work doesn’t involve “violence.”  But we also understand that fascists & far-right bigots very much favor violence over nearly anything else.  Political violence is one of the defining traits of fascism, so we need to be prepared to defend ourselves and our communities from that.

There is a 100-year history of anti-fascists employing only non-violent means to resist fascists.  In most of those examples, it ended with the fascists simply murdered the anti-fascists.  Perhaps the most famous group of antifa pacifists were The White Rose, a student group that formed in Munich in 1942 and used peaceful means to resist the nazis.  The nazis arrested them all and executed them less than a year later.

Just last month, three fascist terrorists were arrested for plotting to go to the home of two anti-fascists and murder them and their entire family.  Within a couple of days, three more fascists from the same terrorist group were arrested for planning a mass shooting in Richmond, VA

Still the calls for anti-fascists to lay down and peacefully interact with the terrorists threatening our communities though, huh?  Well, you’re not alone - some people do think it would be best if we hugged it out with the people trying to murder us.  The role of pacifism in anti-fascism is something we debated right here on this tumblr a few years ago.

But to insist that anti-fascists must abide by the tenets of fascism?  That’s something else entirely and seems to come from a place of enormous privilege - one where you’re not ever going to be targeted for murder by fascists and far-right bigots and so you feel like you have a right to dictate to the people who are targeted by fascists the tactics they’re allowed to employ to stop from being murdered.

If you’re equating anti-fascist self-defence of themselves and their communities with the fascist violence & terrorism they are defending against, you’re committing a grave false equivalence logical fallacy - one that’s made all the worse when you compare the scale of violence.

Last year we documented 576 acts of violence committed by fascists & far-right bigots that killed 373 people and injured 1156 other people

Fascists and extreme right bigots were responsible for every extremist killing that happened in the U.S. in 2018

73% of all terrorist attacks that killed people in the U.S. between 2002-2017 were committed by the far rightFascists and far-right extremists have murdered 2x more people in the U.S. than so-called “jihadists” since 9/11

In Europe, you are 5x more likely to die in a terror attack committed by a fascist/far-right extremist than you are in a terror attack inspired by ISIS.

If it’s politically-motivated violence that concerns you, then clearly your calls for pacifism would do the most good if you directed them at the side committing the lion’s share of the violence and literally all of the most-severe violence - the fascists/extreme right bigots.

We wish you the best of luck with that.
