Who Killed the Postal Service?

The Postal Service is cutting services to avoid bankruptcy. How did it get into such a sorry state?

It infuriates me every time this comes up that nobody famous is using their platform to call a bullshit shovel a bullshit shovel: the “Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act” was specifically designed to kill the US Postal Service by forcing it to pre-fund employee pensions out to 50+ years– something literally no other agency or company is required to do, costing it well over $5 billion every year– and prohibiting it from lowering prices or entering any new market aside from delivering mail and selling stamps. The law was written by members of hard-right fascist organizations like the American Legislative Exchange Council and the CATO Institute, passed by a lame duck Republican House in the dark of night by voice vote so that there would be no official Congressional record of the fact that many of the Representatives voting in favor of killing USPS owned stock in– or received massive amounts of lobbying money from– FedEx, UPS, and DHX, and was signed into law by George Dubya Connecticut Yankee Carpetbagger Bush. Republicans have been trying to privatize or eliminate USPS for decades.
