I don’t know who needs to hear this, but if the present situation fills you with unimaginable dread and worry, or uncertainty, or just plain Stress, you aren’t alone. I don’t think I’ve had a single night of restful sleep since February.
You shouldn’t feel guilty using your creative or recreational outlets to cope with the imminent threat posed by recent decisions from our administration. Millions more people are going to get sick because of it. That’s scary. It would be wrong NOT to have some kind of bad feeling about it.
More importantly, it’s okay to have no idea what you’re going to do or what will happen. I don’t think any of us have any real certainty about that in this moment.
But I gotta do my due diligence and ask: are y’all okay? Because holy fuck, I am not.
On this day, 6 May 1919, Alejandro Finisterre, anarchist poet and inventor of the Spanish version of table football or “foosball” was born. His political idealism seemed to be realised with the outbreak of the revolution in 1936 which defeated the military rising of general Franco.
However his house was bombed by nationalist forces and he was severely injured. Seeing many injured children who were unable to play football with their friends, he built a table out of pine and attached players to steel bars - inventing the modern version of table football commonly played in Spain.
After the war he had to flee the Franco regime to France, and was imprisoned for four years in Morocco before heading to the Americas.
