On this day, 4 August 1792, radical Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley was born near Horsham in Sussex. He was expelled from Oxford University in 1811 for contributing to an atheist pamphlet, and soon married Mary, author of Frankenstein. He had a tragic life and died young, but wrote some of the greatest English Romantic poetry, including The Masque of Anarchy, which he penned in the wake of the Peterloo massacre, which ends with this fiery appeal to the working class: “Rise like Lions after slumber In unvanquishable number! Shake your chains to earth like dew Which in sleep had fallen on you: Ye are many—they are few!”

For comparison purposes, the poll described above, commissioned by Democratic consultants Katie Merrill and Dave Metz, found that of Joe Biden’s supporters, only 1% felt that receiving a mail-in ballot would make them less likely to vote.

This is actually a fascinating concept called the marginal propensity of consumption. It BASICALLY means that each additional dollar to a poor person (Like someone on minimum wage) is comparatively more valuable than each additional dollar to a wealthy person (like a millionaire or billionaire) because the poor person is more likely to go spend it on a good or service whereas the wealthy person will stick it in an offshore account.

With the poor person, it will continue changing hands within the economy and get spent more often, leading to higher economic output. The wealthy person takes that dollar out of the economy by sticking it in a bank account to grow their wealth, and the dollar effectively becomes useless and stops changing hands.

Comet NEOWISE over Vikos Gorge

Explanation: Did the Earth part to show us this comet? Of course not, even if this image makes it seem that way. Pictured far in the background is Comet NEOWISE as it appeared about two weeks ago over northern Greece. Above the comet are many stars including the bright stars of the Big Dipper (also the Sorcerer, in Aztec mythology), an asterism that many people around the world used to find the naked-eye comet as it hovered in the northern sky over the past month. In the foreground is Vikos Gorge, the deepest gorge on Earth, relative to its width. The gorge was slowly created by erosion from the Voidomatis River over the past few million years. Capturing this image took a lot of planning, waiting, luck, braving high winds, and avoiding local wolves. Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) continues to fade and is now best visible through binoculars as it coasts back to the outer Solar System.
