Aardehuizen, Netherlands

An eco-village constructed from recycled, reused, and locally sourced materials – including hemp, straw bales, wood, locally sourced clay, and recycled car tyres. The village contains 23 houses and is a home to 70 people. The village produces 75% of its own electricity and 100% of its own hot water from solar energy.

The next gen of council houses should look like this. We have the knowledge and tech to build environmentally friendly homes, that also use natural resources to keep your bills down / make em non existent. But homes like this are the preserve or middle class divs who’re making a lifestyle choice, when we should all have access to em.

workingclasshistory:

On this day, 8 August 1879, Emiliano Zapata, revolutionary and leading figure of the peasant army which helped overthrow Porfirio Diaz in the 1910 Mexican revolution, was born. Of Nahua and Spanish mestizo descent, he organised alongside local Indigenous communities to fight against land seizures by wealthy hacienda owners, and occupy seized land. With the outbreak of revolution, he led a revolutionary militia, took part in many battles, and under the slogan “Tierra y Libertad” (“Land and Liberty”) kept fighting for the original goals of the revolution, most crucially land redistribution. After Zapata was assassinated, his followers kept up the struggle, and today, after an uprising in the 1990s, modern day Indigenous Zapatistas control a sizeable autonomous territory in Chiapas.
