The new rules chip away at protections for sexual assault survivors. Among other changes, universities are no longer obligated to investigate most sexual assaults that occur off-campus, where an estimated 80 percent of college students live, or to complete their inquiry within 60 days. Professors and administrators no longer have to report sexual violence when they’re informed of an incident. The regulations also narrow the type of sexual harassment that universities are required to probe to behavior “so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive that it effectively denies a person equal access to the [school’s] education program or activity.” At the same time, the DOE effectively raised the evidentiary bar for schools to take action from a “preponderance of evidence” to a “clear and convincing” standard—or from a more than 50 percent likelihood to a more than 75 percent likelihood. Universities would also be found in violation of the regulations only if they responded to sexual harassment in a way that was “deliberately indifferent.”

Good lord.

Turtle Dies After Shell Was Painted With Nail Polish And Glitter

An Ohio Animal Conservation Center is warning about the dangers of painting turtles’ shells after one died in its care. But, what makes painting on a turtle’s shell so bad?

Well the shell is a living part of the turtle’s body. They are unable to absorb vitamin D properly when it is painted.

When you cover them in paint, it blocks the shells ability to absorb vitamin D, which leads to growth and bone issues. In serious cases it can metabolic bone disease, a painful and debilitating condition.

If the site is particularly badly designed, you might just be able to delete the overlay itself. Right click > Inspect element and delete the line of HTML (it’ll be highlighted automatically)

hey kids there is a website called outline.com that will let you read from pretty much any news site with a paywall for free

outline.com is amazing - it hasn’t failed yet on any site that I’ve tried it on.

There’s a chrome extension and firefox extension.

All of these resources are incredible but don’t forget how fucked it is that we have to do this.

I wonder if part of this isn’t tied to how reputable news sites finance themselves, as opposed to how places like Fox and Breitbart make their money. No saying that a truly independent and serious publication cannot be free to read (looking at you, The Guardian), but perhaps it plays a part.
