An earthquake was felt in parts of Jamaica this morning.
The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies says the quake measured 4.8 and was located at approximately eight kilometres east of Mile Gully, Manchester.
The unit said that it occurred at 7:28 a.m and had a focal depth of 24 kilometres.
Earlier, the US Geological Survey reported that the tremor had a magnitude of 4.5 and hit around five kilometres south-south east of Alexandria, St Ann, with a depth of 10 kilometres.
The unit reported that the earthquake was felt in Kingston and St Andrew.
Readers told The Gleaner that it was also felt in St Ann, St Catherine, Manchester, Hanover, St Elizabeth Clarendon, St James, and Trelawny.
Masha The Hero
They forgot the part where the ambulance actually stopped to let the cat in
oh good I was worried
What a good cat. What a kind cat. How can anyone not love cats they are so good and loving.
they also forgot the part where they only found the baby because masha was screaming her head off bc she knew this baby was in danger. she went around outside the alley the next morning and yelled at passerby until she got one to follow her to the baby. she kept him warm all night and then made sure someone found him. she was adopted after this bc she was a stray and is in a loving home and is a hero
Hero cat
Thank you, Masha, you’re such a good girl.
See.
Kittens can’t regulate their own body temperature. That’s why they pile up.
Cats see us as colony members.
Masha saw a kitten that was on its own, no mommy, no other kittens to cuddle with. She instinctively knew that was a cold kitten. She knew that a kitten alone on a cold night was very likely to die. Because a kitten would have died too.
So, all she was doing was what any good colony member does - protecting the abandoned kitten. Then when the abandoned kitten’s mommy didn’t come back, she called the rest of the colony for help.
People have this bizarre idea that housecats don’t have a social sense. They do, and it saved this kid’s life. And possibly Masha’s too, as life on the streets is dangerous for a kitty.
We say “good dog” all the time, but Masha was being a very, very good cat…not just by human moral standards but by feline ones.
“Japanese critics have frequently dismissed Honda as worthy of consideration, regarding him merely as the director of entertainment films aimed at children. By contrast they have elevated Kurosawa to the status of national treasure. As for the men themselves, by all accounts Honda and Kurosawa had nothing but respect for one another’s work. Prospective studies of the history of Japanese cinema should therefore treat Honda’s direction of monster movies and Kurosawa’s interpretation of prestigious sources such as Shakespeare as equally deserving of serious discussion.” - Inuhiko Yomota
Another Christmas present, this time Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa. I’m a big fan of Godzilla (who isn’t?), but it’s exciting to have a book that’s about the director himself. Not only to read about his non daikaiju films like Matango and Half Human, but to read about the man himself.
Whether it’s Shigeru Mizuki, Akira Kurosawa or Masaki Kobayashi, some of these post-war mangaka and directors have life stories that are as exciting as their work. More than anything it’s interesting how their life experiences directly contribute to their creativity.
I’m real early in so far, but it’s great to read a book that places Honda in the context of Japanese cinema rather than as this offshoot monster movie guy. Having the input of Honda’s own family is a real interesting touch much like tim Lucas’s leg-breaking Mario Bava book.
You can buy Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film, from Godzilla to Kurosawa here, doing so helps this blog :)
CNN media correspondent Brian Stelter spoke to our pals at Fresh Air about his new book, Hoax: Donald Trump, Fox News and the Dangerous Distortion of Truth. “I really think that in some ways [Trump] wants to be a television producer more than a president sometimes,” Stelter says.
