I met him 15 years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding in even the most rudimentary sense, of life or death, or good or evil, of right or wrong. I met this 6 year old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face, and the blackest eyes. The devil’s eyes. I spent eight years trying to reach him and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, because I realized that what was living behind that boy’s eyes was purely and simply evil.
Ray Mala (Ach-nach-chiak) was the earliest Native Alaskan star and director in Hollywood. He got his start assisting the Knud Rasmussen Arctic Expedition to Alaska in the early 1920s with their cameras, which gave him film experience. He moved back with them to Los Angeles, and got a job as a Hollywood cameraman. He was eventually noticed as an actor, and cast in the films Igloo and Eskimo, and later transitioned to being a director.
