FYI: THIS IS SUPER ILLEGAL

A landlord MAY NOT keep your deposit over ‘normal wear and tear’. They may ONLY collect on something that is YOUR FAULT. They cannot charge for carpet wearing down or needing a new coat of paint after a few years, or the furnace needing a replacement because it’s old. They can charge you for punching a hole in the wall that you never fix, or spilling paint on the carpet requiring a specialized cleaning or replacement. And they may ONLY keep what covers the repairs (If insufficient, then and only then may they keep the whole deposit, as in your deposit did not cover the damage you caused).

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS A TENANT. You landlord MUST return your deposit unless it was damage you directly caused, and ONLY the amount needed to fix the damage, and not one penny more.

Join a tenants’ union.

The Colossus Statue of Rameses II “Memnon the Younger”

Originally from the Ramesseum, Thebes 𓌀𓏏𓈈𓊖 “wAs.t”, Egypt 𓆎𓅓𓏏𓊖 “kmt”, 19th Dynasty, about 1250 BC.

Ramses II (𓇳𓏤𓄟𓋴𓇓) “re-msi-sw” ‘He, Born of Re’ succeeded his father Seti I (𓊪𓏏𓎛𓁣𓇌𓌸𓈖) “stḥy mri.n-ptḥ” ‘Seti, beloved of Ptah’ in around 1279 BC and ruled for 67 years.

This fragment of his statue 𓂙𓏏𓏭𓀾 “hnty” was cut from a single block of two-coloured granite 𓌳𓄿𓏏𓏋𓊌𓏫 “mAt”. He is shown wearing the nemes head-dress surmounted by a cobra diadem.

The sculptor has used a slight variation of normal conventions to relate his work to the viewer, angling the eyes down slightly, so that the statue relates more to those looking at it. It was retrieved from the mortuary temple of Ramses at Thebes (the ‘Ramesseum’) by Giovanni Belzoni in 1816.

Belzoni wrote a fascinating account of his struggle to remove it, both literally, given its colossal size, and politically. The hole on the right of the torso is said to have been made by members of Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt at the end of the eighteenth century, in an unsuccessful attempt to remove the statue. It arrived in England in 1818.

After its arrival in The British Museum the ‘Younger Memnon’ was perhaps the first piece of Egyptian sculpture to be recognized as a work of art by connoisseurs, who traditionally judged things by the standards of ancient Greek art.

Naqada Jar with Painted Decoration

This clay pot is an artifact from ancient Egypt. It is Predynastic, the earliest period in Egyptian history. The pot was created during what is known as the Naqada II period (3500-3200 BC), long before the pyramids were built.

This pot was probably made without use of a pottery wheel. The potter most likely pressed the damp clay between his or her hand and a large, flat tool held in the other hand. This created a thin-walled vessel, which could be easily carried and stored.

The decoration on the pot is typical of the Naqada II style. The top decoration is a large boat with many oars. The birds below the boat are probably flamingos, common wading birds. These decorations illustrate the importance of the Nile River to the Naqada II culture.
