Via London Antifascists

We are deeply saddened at the loss of our comrade and friend Josh on Saturday, many of us knew him through the anti-fascist work he did or got to know him fighting against Isis with the IFB in Syria. He was a principled and committed revolutionary who was striving to win a better world, doing it with a warmth and humour that drove people to kindness and cooperation. He was an example to all of us to do better both as people and comrades.

This is not just a crushing loss for those who knew him or worked with him, it’s a devastating loss for the whole labour movement. He will be dearly and deeply missed.

Rest in power Josh, you will be missed!

Last week, the free pantry outside the Birmingham Free Store was smashed and all of its contents destroyed. We don’t want to say it was the cops, but everyone’s pretty sure it was the cops - they had been spotted eyeing the store and taking pictures multiple times leading up to this, likely pissed off by the banner we had put up in support of George Floyd + all of the anti-cop and openly anarchist literature we distribute

Within 24 hours we had received a new, even bigger pantry and more donations than we knew what to do with so we could stock it back up. We’re showing them that we’re not intimidated and we’re not going anywhere. We have the community on our side

If you want to support queer-affirming mutual aid and reproductive justice in a historically poor and Black neighborhood in Alabama, donate to the Free Store!!! We’re on both patreon and venmo at @bhamfreestore - the patreon covers supplies and running costs, and the venmo is a virtual tip jar that compensates the volunteers who keep it running

Update: The Free Store has recently lost the support of some major donors that were helping to keep the store running. Without that consistent support, it’ll be increasingly difficult to provide life-saving COVID safety resources (and more) to the over 300 people who depend on them. That’s why they need help from all you wonderful allies and accomplices across the world

Here’s a few things you can do:

  • Subscribe to the Free Store’s patreon to provide stable, recurring support that can be relied on for continued operation
  • Make a one-time monetary donation to their venmo (@bhamfreestore) or cashapp ($bhamfreestore)
  • Donate hygiene supplies, household items, seed packets, communist propaganda, or whatever else they can give away in bulk. If you live in Birmingham, bring it to 2030 Bessemer Rd during operating hours (see their social media for more info). If you don’t, you can now mail donations to P.O. Box 110429, Birmingham, AL, 35211-0429
  • Help get them connected to big donors, sponsors, grants, suppliers, distros, and co-conspirators - especially those that align with their values. Something like an anarchist mask-sewing or sanitizer-brewing collective that’s willing to give us a discount in solidarity would be kickass. Other, less kickass connections would also be very appreciated. Email lilith@cm.yellowhammerfund.org if you have any info that might help
  • Local Bham/Alabama businesses, organizations, nonprofits - let’s collab. There are several ways you might be able to help, such as allowing the Free Store to put up a donation box in your building which they will come by to empty every week (or as often as needed). Again, email lilith@cm.yellowhammerfund.org if you’re interested in supporting
  • Spread the word!

The Free Store has been such an awesome development for Bham and I’d love to see it continue to provide for the community and grow. Please signal boost this post!

My Mother’s Garden

The garden lasted a few months. Then, an agent of the town’s housing authority found out about it and told my mother it was against the rules. “But no one’s using the land,” I remember her arguing. “The kids in the neighborhood play there.” The response was clear: Get rid of the garden or be evicted. Here was another one of those impossible choices of poverty. This was what my classmates would never understand, as they earnestly debated welfare fraud and the grasping desperation of the undeserving poor.

My mother stopped tending the garden and the next weekend a maintenance worker came and poured something onto the soil that made all the plants die and turned the grass brown.

On this day, 2 October 1766, the Great Cheese Riot of Nottingham, England began. Angry at the excessive price of cheese, a mob formed who seized it and began wheeling or carrying the cheeses away. The mayor attempted to restore order but was knocked down by a cheese.
Two or three of the crowd were arrested, so then the crowd attacked the building housing them until they were released. The army arrived the next day, but rioting and expropriations continued and were only put down the day after that.

A brinicle, also commonly known as an “ice stalactite” forms under the sea ice when a flow of extremely cold saline water is introduced to ocean water. It is known as an ice stalactite because it is the undersea equivalent of a hollow stalactite. It freezes everything it touches, including sea creatures.
