The post office is also used as an office for passport services, and having a post office box to receive mail is the only safe mail delivery option for many people.
I have heard multiple times that mail is unnecessary anymore. Have you tried to deal with UPS or FedEx with a problem? They are not incentivized to be helpful. They know they got you by the short hairs. USPS is an equalizer, it’s a public service.
