On this day, 6 October 1985, Tottenham, London went up in flames as residents of the Broadwater Farm estate rose up against police after the death of Cynthia Jarrett, an African-Caribbean mother during a police search of her home: only days after police shot Dorothy Groce in Brixton. Police then tried to frame several Black men and boys for the killing of a police officer during the disturbances, and three were jailed for several years until being released on appeal.

What non-creepy, non-terrorism related reason is there for this to exist?

The guy behind clearview is a failed model douchebag. His defense for creating this AI was that “well, someone would eventually do it, so why don’t I cash in on it”. Besides that awful line of reasoning, his AI was built by taking people’s facebook pictures. So he defends himself by saying that he’s using publically available information except, ya know, he never asked for permission to use any of that info. And facebooks’s response was to tell him that he’s not allowed to do that, but that’s easily ignored.

I know the NYT did a piece on him and his tech the beginning of this year/end of last year, when it was found that he would be supplying the facial recognition tech to police departments.

I’ll see if I can find the article.

EDIT: Found it! Knew I saved the article.
