A true story of kids’ self-organisation during the Nazi occupation in Greece.

The “Barefoot Battalion” (released n 1953) is the true story of 160
children who were thrown out in the streets from the orphanages of
Thessaloniki, Greece by the Nazi occupiers during the years of the
city’s occupation in World War II.
A group of these orphans, in
order to survive, decide to take life in their own hands. They are
self-organized as a secret “army” forming attack and assist groups,
stealing essential supplies and food from nazi trucks or from black
market crooks during a time of sheer desperation and starvation due to
the nazi occupation and the historic harsh winter with no hope on sight.
The stolen items are then distributed to the orphans, but also to
residents of the city of Thessaloniki who were in need.
Legend
has it that in addition to helping the people, they managed using their
network to help the Resistance, finding ways for people to flee to the
Middle East, so that they can join the allied forces over there.
The film, directed by Gregg G. Tallas, was nominated for Best Foreign
Academic Award and won first prize at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
The idea for the film came in the late 40’s, when Greek actor Nikos
Katsiotis, who was in the USA at the time, was discussing with Greek
American director Gregg Tallas, the story of Thessaloniki’s victory
parade in November of 1944, on the day it celebrated its liberation from
German Occupation. Katsiotis told Tallas how right at the tail end, a
group of barefoot, bedraggled kids paraded, holding a banner with the
words “Το Ξυπόλητο Τάγμα”, (Barefoot Battalion). Gregg Tallas was so
enchanted and moved by this story that he decided to make it into a
film, shot on location in Thessaloniki and Athens, even at the notorious
black market sites, and the cast was made up of some of Greece’s
well-known actors at the time, while 63 of the 66 children came from
orphanages and reform institutions in Athens and Thessaloniki.
The U.S. Attorney Middle District of Tennessee identified the suspect as Blake A. Reed.
During the riot, Reed tweeted “We the people have spoken and we are pissed! No antifa, no BLM (Black Lives Matter), We the people took the Capitol! Every American ethnicity was here. Democratic tyranny WILL NOT STAND! WE HAVE SPOKEN!!
The arrest of Reed comes after a Tennessee man suspected of storming the U.S. Capitol was arrested last week. 30-year-old Eric Munchel, of Nashville, was charged with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority and one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.
On Sunday, the FBI Washington Field Office released new photos of suspects involved in the Capitol riot.

I legitimately love delivering pizzas! If it were sustainable i wouldn’t mind at all doing it for the rest of my life! One of my best friends absolutely loves cleaning, and the only reason she quit cleaning professionally is that she was sick of the ways she was treated. My stepfather has been a carpenter and construction worker for 30 years, despite being a highly qualified graphic designer and architect, bc the man just fuckin loves construction work. For every “menial/undesireable” job available, there is someone who is happy to work it, if not for the stigma and need to survive. And for the truly awful ones? Like slaughterhouse cleanup, sewer maintenance, roadkill pickup, etc? With UBI they could almost all be mechanized, saving people from having to do grueling and dangerous jobs they really don’t have to do.
There are even people who will do those jobs because they recognize that they need to get done. Those people may not love the job itself but they take great pride in doing something that needs to be done.
People don’t just work for free doing jobs they love. If there’s a niche there will always be someone willing to fill it.
I talk shit but I actually don’t genuinely truly HATE retail, what I hate is how people (customers and employers) use, abuse, overwork, and generally treat the employees like shit
If I could have reasonable hours and accommodations for my limitations and be paid enough to survive without being asked to do 25 jobs advertised as 1 job and had UBI to ensure I could leave if it was too much/I was being mistreated/taken advantage of by employers looking to overwork employees to make more money I’d be totally happy to work retail as long as I physically could
