On this day, 6 February 1976, Native American activist Leonard Peltier was captured in Canada on the basis of fictitious affidavits generated by the FBI. He was later extradited to the US, where he is still in prison supposedly for the killing of two FBI agents. One of the affidavits was signed by Myrtle Poor Bear, and stated she was Peltier’s girlfriend and witnessed the killings. However according to other witnesses she was not present at the scene, nor did she know Peltier. Poor Bear herself claimed she was threatened by the FBI and pressured into giving the statements, and she attempted to testify to this at Peltier’s trial; however the judge barred her testimony.

A neighbor called and said she saw a swarm on a fire hydrant so I grabbed my bucket and ran there as fast as I could. I dabbed some lemongrass oil on the bottom of it and they walked in. After about 5 minutes I just scooped the rest in and bam! Free bees!

I got the queen on the first scoop too though. Apparently she was a new one because she was piping in there really loudly. This is my first personal swarm catch so honestly I’m not sure if that was supposed to happen or not.

I feel this is an appropriate post to retell the time my dad got free bees (found an extra thrown swarm) but didn’t have any equipment to transport them, so he just grabbed the queen in a pint jar, let the other swarm into his Ford Escort, and drove down the highway to home with a swarm of bees loose in the car.

I would honestly die of delight to find someone who watched my dad (~72 white guy) driving down a major Illinois highway with a swarm of bees loose in the car just chillin.

I’m sorry, he’s just like that.

I love this post because the replies are like “for anyone who doesn’t know what nestle did, they benefited from [insert human rights violation here]” but nestle has done SO many fucked up things you get a different topic in every comment

Nestle has:

Drained water from places suffering from drought for absolute pennies.

Made African mothers dependent on their milk formula, which they gave for free, until their milk dried up. Then they required them to purchase it, mothers could not afford it, mixed in too little to fulfill nutrient needs, and mixed it with polluted water. Children died.

Used slavery to produce their cocoa.

Pushed for water to be considered a “want” not a “need” and is at the forefront of arguments that water is not a human right.

Poisoned Chinese infants with melamine in their milk formula.

Demanded Ethiopia pay a debt owed to Nestle, during a FAMINE.

Price-fixed food items.

Contributed to deforestation for their cocoa farming.

The worst thing is, Nestle owns TONS of other brands, making it difficult to avoid for certain products.
