CONTENT WARNING FOR GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF VIOLENT ABUSE; DOMESTIC ASSAULT.
Turns out at least nine of the would-be insurrectionists of January 6th - including two Snitch Boys, a Threeper, and the elder Mr. Zip Ties - all have looong histories of violently assaulting/threatening to murder their partners and family members.
WHAT A SHOCK!
It’s almost as if misogyny and violence are key parts of fascism or something.
A new law decriminalizing same-sex sexual relations has gone into effect today in Angola. The new law overturned a colonial-era “vice against nature” provision that was seen as a ban on homosexual relations. The changes were passed in January of 2019 by Angola’s parliament, but was not signed into law by the country’s president until November 2020. The new law also prohibits discrimination based upon a person’s sexual orientation.
“This is an act of sovereignty by the Angolan State which, after 134 years of being governed in the criminal and criminal fields, with a code that has been in force since 1886, from the colonial administration, now has the penal code totally inspired by political reality, legal, cultural and social Angolan,” Francisco Queiroz, minister of justice and human rights, said. at the time. “Therefore it is an aspect that must be underlined, this one of the consolidation of the national sovereignty.”
On this day, 11 February 1916, Lithuanian-born Jewish anarchist Emma Goldman was arrested in New York City for distributing information on birth control. She was technically charged with breaching the Comstock Act, which banned “obscene” material from the mail or from being transported across state lines.
Goldman’s arrest came as she was due to deliver a public lecture on family planning, which was a key concern for working class people. Radicals argued that family planning was essential for working class people to be able to have an acceptable standard of living, and believed that authorities opposed birth control so that there would be an oversupply of labour to keep down wages and fill the army.
Emma Goldman decided to defend herself in court, and used the trial to generate large amounts of publicity for her message. She was eventually convicted, and rather than pay a $100 fine she chose to serve 15 days in prison.
We have a collection of Goldman’s writings on sex and gender available here, as well as reproductions of this mugshot: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/all/emma-goldman https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1650011538517323/?type=3
Behind the Scenes of Miskatonic U: The Resonator | Full Moon Features
This month, Full Moon Features is returning to Lovecraft with the newest entry in what they’ve dubbed the “Miskatonic U” series. A follow-up to From Beyond, Re-Animator, and Lurking Fear, Miskatonic U: The Resonator has just wrapped production, and The Future is Fantastic has some behind-the-scenes photos!
Set on the fictional “Miskatonic University” campus in Arkham, Massachusetts where all sorts of fantastic and unworldly events have been known to unfold in Lovecraft lore, Miskatonic U: The Resonator follows six gifted students as they navigate life after one of them, Crawford Tillinghast, builds a machine known as the “Resonator.” The machine allows one to experience multiple dimensions while navigating the unsavory beasts that dwell within them. But things get complicated when Tillinghast realizes that the prototype of his creation has not only released murderous and deadly creatures into his world, but also has affected his own reality.
Inspired by both the works of legendary fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft and beloved genre director Stuart Gordon and created by horror powerhouse, Charles Band, and writer-director William Butler (Madhouse, Furnace, Demonic Toys 2), MISKATONIC U: THE RESONATOR stars acclaimed and internationally beloved cult film actors Michael Pare (Eddie And The Cruisers, The Philadelphia Experiment, Streets Of Fire) and Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare On Elm Street, Fast Times At Ridgemont High) as well as a breakout group of young talent including Christina Braa, Dane Oliver, Amanda Victoria Jones and Austin Woods. The film also features performances and cameos from many of the original cast members that have long been associated with Gordon and the films from Band’s Empire Pictures universe.
