LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT OF CHIP FITZGERALD!

Romaine “Chip” Fitzgerald is gone. The State buried him alive in the California prison system a long time ago. It was in 1969, and he was 19 years old and a soldier in the Black Panther Party. It was the year J. Edgar Hoover promised to wipe out the Black Panther Party.

Still, through all the years, the decades, of incarceration, the State did not kill Chip’s will to live to fight another day for the liberation of black and all oppressed people. He fought to the last minute of life.

Chip was my Comrade in the Southern California Chapter of the Black Panther Party, in Los Angeles, and I bear witness that he gave his whole life to the People, to our freedom. And I bear witness that he is a hero of our struggle.

If we would celebrate the life of Chip, let us look for him in the whirlwind of new generations of revolutionaries rising. Let us hold him high in our ongoing struggle. Let us remember him and honor him by recommitting ourselves to freedom.
