VINCENT PRICE AND THE CURSE OF THE TEMPLAR
LeeWeek Day 7 2021:
“All that is gold does not glitter. Not all those who wander are lost. The old that is strong does not wither. Deep roots are not reached by the frost.” – JRR Tolkien
A quote from Lord of the Rings, one of Sir Christopher Lee’s favorite books and one of mine. I think it’s so cool that he read it every year and also that he got to meet Tolkien. When he said that he was so starstruck upon meeting him that he could barely speak, I imagine that probably would have been me if I ever met Christopher Lee.
Happy birthday!!
──── EGYPTOLOGISTS ────
Caroline Louise Ransom Williams (1872–1952) not only attended the University of Chicago, receiving an MA in classical archaeology and Egyptology, but she was encouraged by James Henry Breasted to follow in his footsteps to study in Berlin, making her one of the first women in Europe to study Egyptology. Not long after, Caroline returned to University of Chicago to become the first American woman to receive an advanced degree in Egyptology, writing her doctoral dissertation under Breasted. Keeping a close relationship with Breasted, Caroline went on to work at a variety of institutions, including the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1926, she accepted Breasted’s offer to work on the Epigraphic Survey in Egypt, where she was an epigrapher at the great mortuary temple of Ramses III until 1927; she later worked in Egypt (1935–1936) on the Coffin Texts project at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
