Jovenel Moïse: Police kill four after Haiti’s president assassinated - BBC News

A deadly gun battle between police and the men suspected of assassinating Haiti’s President Jovenel Moïse has been raging in Port-au-Prince.

Police chief Léon Charles said four suspects had been killed and two detained but some remained at large and a manhunt was still under way.

“They will be killed or captured,” the police chief said.

Mr Moïse, 53, was fatally shot and his wife was injured when attackers stormed their home early on Wednesday.

Police chief Charles described dramatic scenes as officers confronted the alleged assassins.

“We blocked [the suspects] en route as they left the scene of the crime,” he told a news conference. “Since then, we have been battling with them.” …

Big Lie teller Rudy Giuliani is paying the price for being loyal to Trump. Due to his false claims that the election was fraudulent, he has been suspended from practicing law in New York and DC. Additionally, he faces several lawsuits for defamation and conspiracy for inciting the terrorist attack on the Capitol on January 6.

Unfortunately, online fundraising efforts for the disgraced former NYC lawyer fell $4.99 million short of the $5 million they aimed to raise. It appears that Giuliani’s funding plea on Fundly has been removed to prevent further embarrassment.

Any hope Giuliani might have had that Trump would dip into his quarter-billion dollar campaign fund to cover Giluliani’s legal bills is virtually nonexistent. According to The Daily Beast, Giuliani is about as useful to Trump as an empty Adderall bottle. …

Nick Fuentes, the far-right commentator who attended the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, compared the Holocaust to a cookie-baking operation and suggested killing state legislators, was finally banned from Twitter today. Given that there was nothing in the rulebook he hadn’t broken before, it wasn’t clear what finally forced Twitter’s hand and the company declined to tell reporters what it was.

…on Friday, long after a bevy of other platforms—among them YouTube, PayPal, and TikTok—had booted him, Twitter finally stripped his access for unclear reasons. Company spokesperson Trenton Kennedy declined to specify why they did so, telling Mother Jones only that he’d been “permanently suspended for repeated violations of the Twitter Rules.” He declined to share more information.

Fuentes is perhaps the most blatantly racist figure on the American far-right to receive official support from the Republican Party, recently joining forces with Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar.

“There is some hope, maybe, for America First in Congress,” Mr. Fuentes said, referring to the name of his movement, a group that aims to preserve white, Christian identity and culture. “And that is thanks to — almost exclusively — to Representative Paul Gosar.”

Opioid-pushing Sackler family pays to get off the hook and gets to keep billions | Boing Boing

Nearly 500,000 Americans died from opioids between 1999 and 2019 while the Sackler drug-dealing family enriched itself by illegally pushing addictive Oxycontin on patients.

New York Magazine reports that 15 state attorneys general have agreed to settle lawsuits against Purdue Pharma for its illegal sales practices that caused millions of people to become addicted to OxyContin. Purdue’s current owners (descendants of the three Sackler brothers who founded Purdue) will pay a $4.5 billion settlement in exchange for being allowed to reorganize the company in bankruptcy court.

From New York:

The $4.5 billion sum is hefty, but the Sacklers can pay it: The House Committee on Oversight and Reform estimates the family's net assets at around $11 billion. It also appears they will not face criminal charges.

One other thing the Sackler family won’t do is apologize for their starring role in a disaster that killed a half million people:

At a press conference announcing the settlement, attorneys general from New York, Massachusetts, and Minnesota noted they were unable to secure a public apology or an admission of culpability. Instead, the family made off with its remaining $6.5 billion or so and gave a boilerplate statement: “This resolution to the mediation is an important step toward providing substantial resources for people and communities in need. The Sackler family hopes these funds will help achieve that goal.”
