Netflix has fired a leader of the trans employee resource group who was organizing the upcoming October 20th walkout. The employee, who is Black and currently pregnant, asked not to be named for fear of online harassment. They have been encouraging trans employees and allies to walk out of work in protest of Netflix’s handling of the Dave Chappelle special The Closer. The employee declined to speak to The Verge for this story.
“All these white people are going around talking to the press and speaking publicly on Twitter and the only person who gets fired is the Black person who was quiet the entire time,” says a former employee in an interview with The Verge. “That’s absurd, and just further shows that Black trans people are the ones being targeted in this conversation.”

On this day, 15 October 1966, in Oakland, California, Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton met and set up the Black Panther Party for Self Defence. The Party would exist, despite heavy repression, until 1982 and ran a variety of programmes from free breakfasts for school children and community health clinics to armed citizen patrols and monitoring of the police. The group advocated for revolutionary socialism, and for the liberation of Black and all other oppressed peoples. Another little-mention fact about the group is that in the 1970s a majority of its membership were women and girls. It was eventually broken by violent state repression, including being targeted by the FBI’s COINTELPRO operation, with many of its members killed or imprisoned.

On this day, 14 October 1977, anti-gay crusader Anita Bryant was “pied” in the face by Tom Higgins, a gay rights activist. Bryant, who was already well-known as a singer, led Save Our Children, a homophobic campaigning group which successfully overturned legal protections for LGBT+ people in Dade County, Florida. Bryant had declared about homosexuality: “I will lead such a crusade to stop it as this country has not seen before.” After being pied, Bryant burst into tears and began praying. Bryant was also brand ambassador for Florida orange juice, which then became subjected to a mass boycott campaign. Gay bars replaced screwdrivers (vodka and orange juice cocktails) with “Anita Bryants” – made with vodka and apple juice, with the profits donated to the campaign. Bryant’s lucrative orange contract subsequently lapsed and her marriage failed, which caused her to be ostracised by some Christian fundamentalists who did not approve of her divorce. Later in life, Bryant’s homophobic views softened, and she stated she was “more inclined to say live and let live”. In 1998, Dade County reintroduced legal protections for LGBT+ people, and efforts by Christian groups to overturn them failed.

Frequently things are getting out of hand: In Illinois, a “man was arrested…for aggravated battery and disorderly conduct following a disruption at a Mendon Board of Education.” In Virginia, “[o]ne man was arrested, another man was ticketed for trespassing and a third person was hurt at a chaotic” Loudoun County School Board meeting. Prior to the meeting, several “board members received death threats.” When the public comments portion of the meeting ended early to ensure the safety of the attendees, protesters “chanted ’[s]hame on you’ and raised their middle fingers.” In Washington State, a meeting of the Marysville School Board was forced to recess after protesters wouldn’t stop banging on the windows. Following the cancelation of the meeting, the protesters began yelling obscenities. One man grabbed a flag pole and confronted two of the board members. An object was thrown at them as they fled the scene. One school district official was blocked from leaving the parking lot when protesters surrounded his car. In California, unmasked protesters forced their way into the school board meeting room in violation of COVID protocols. The meeting was canceled after the protesters “refused to leave the meeting room and verbally abused the staff.” In Tennessee, a doctor who testified in favor of students wearing masks at a school board meeting was threatened as he left the premises: “[W]e will find you and we know who you are.”“ *** The largest online progressive news show in the world. Gina Peddy, the executive director of curriculum and instruction for the Carroll Independent School District in Southlake, Texas, is alleged to have made the comments during a meeting last Friday, according to NBC News, which obtained audio of the meeting from an unnamed employee. Peddy was reportedly meeting with teachers to instruct them on how to stock their classroom libraries when the subject of recent statewide legislation, as well as the Holocaust, came up. “Just try to remember the concepts of [House Bill] 3979,” Peddy could be heard saying on tape, according to NBC News. “And make sure that if you have a book on the Holocaust, that you have one that has an opposing, that has other perspectives.” House Bill 3979, which went into effect last month, mandates, among other things, that if public school teachers choose to discuss current events or widely debated or controversial public policy or social issues, they should present numerous points of view “without giving deference to any one perspective.”” *** The largest online progressive news show in the world.
