On this day, 18 February 1904, sculptor, teacher and anti-fascist Felicia Browne was born in Thames Ditton, England. With the outbreak of the Spanish civil war in 1936 she travelled to Spain with her friend Edith Bone to fight against the nationalist forces who had risen up against the elected left-wing government. She joined a Republican militia, and became the first British volunteer be killed in the conflict during a mission to blow up a nationalist munitions train.
