[image text, slides taken from @kānakaautonomy on IG: “Want to know the REAL reason gas and power prices are CRUSHING Hawai‘i families, being told we should ‘plan our budget’, or be better at 'reducing our total energy costs’ despite consuming the lowest amount of energy in the nation, all while paying the highest prices? (verbatim from email sent by Joe Viola, Senior Vice President, Hawaiian Electric) If you guessed THE MILITARY+TOURISM, you are right. Jet fuel accounts for nearly three-fifths of the petroleum products consumed in the state. Because of significant demand from military installations and commercial airlines, jet fuel makes up a larger share of total petroleum consumption in Hawai‘i than in any other state. Residents, who consume just 1/10th of total energy in Hawai‘i (the lowest in the entire 'nation’), are PERSONALLY PAYING EVERY SINGLE DAY OF OUR LIVES, often choosing between basic necessities&paying the power bill or putting gas, FOR YOUR MILITARY AND YOUR VACATION. The same jet fuel they use to poison our waters, they use to steal our hard-earned dollars. WHEN WILL THE WAR CRIMES END? Demilitarize Hawai‘i. Hawai‘i is closed.” /ID]
a reminder that, at a time of massive evictions across the country due to eviction moratoriums ending, getting your power shut off often also usually means eviction and subsequent homelessness, &being unable to fill your tank on an island with some of the worst traffic in the country thanks to constant overcrowding usually means losing your job.
getting extremely tired of seeing hot takes centered around the idea that not being happy about gas price hikes is somehow a moral failing or inability to focus on other, bigger problems.
& stay the fuck out of Hawai‘i.
there isn’t any water, medical structure, gas, OR electricity to spare for your fucking vacay.
“I used to believe that the human race as a whole was basically a few steps above wolves. That given the slightest change in circumstances, we would all, sooner or later, tear each other to shreds. That we were, at root, self-interested, cowardly, envious and potentially dangerous in groups. I have since come to believe — after many meals with many different people in many, many different places — that though there is no shortage of people who would do us harm, we are essentially good. That the world is, in fact, filled with mostly good and decent people who are simply doing the best they can. Everybody, it turns out, is proud of their food (when they have it). They enjoy sharing it with others (if they can). They love their children. They like a good joke. Sitting at the table has allowed me a privileged perspective and access that others, looking principally for “the story,” do not, I believe, always get. People feel free, with a goofy American guy who has expressed interest only in their food and what they do for fun, to tell stories about themselves — to let their guard down, to be and to reveal, on occasion, their truest selves. … People, wherever they live, are not statistics. They are not abstractions. … I’m not saying that sitting down with people and sharing a plate is the answer to world peace. Not by a long shot. But it can’t hurt.” - Anthony Bourdain
