Acquired in 1837 by the Berlin museum, this nearly nine-ton colossus has been assigned to Pharaoh 𓉐𓉼 “pr-ˁ3” ‘Great House’ Amenemhat II (𓇋𓏠𓈖𓅓𓄂𓏏) “ı͗mn-m-ḥ3.ṯ”“Amun is in Front” on the basis of style. It is a magnificent
example of colossal ancient Egyptian 𓂋𓐝𓎀𓀂𓀭𓏪 “rmṯ” statuary.The single block of stone from which the statue 𓂙𓏏𓏭𓀾 “ḫnty” was carved was quarried at Aswan 𓋴𓃹𓈖𓏌𓏲𓌕𓊖 “swnw” and then shipped more than five hundred 𓍦 miles north 𓎔𓏏𓏏 “mḥt(y) to the area of Memphis 𓉞𓉐𓂓𓏤𓊪𓏏𓎛𓀭 “hwt-kA-pth” “the Soul Mansion of Ptah” (near present-day Cairo), where the sculpting was completed and the statue was erected 𓊢𓂝𓂻 “ˁḥˁ” within a temple 𓉞𓉐 “ḥw.t” complex.
Six hundred 𓍧 years later, during Dynasty 19, kings Ramesses II (𓇳𓏤𓄟𓋴𓇓) “rˁ-msı͗-sw” ‘Him, Born of Re and Merneptah (𓁰𓁧𓈘𓈖𓊵𓁷𓏤) “mri-n-ptḥ ḥtp-ḥr-mAAt” ‘Beloved of Ptah, Maat is Satisfied’ added their names 𓂋𓈖𓏫 “rn.w” to the statue, and some facial features were altered to resemble images 𓏏𓅱𓏏𓀾𓏪 “twt.w” of Ramesses II.
At this time 𓊃𓊪𓊗 “sp” the statue presumably was transported to Piramesse (in the eastern 𓋁𓃀𓏏𓏭𓈊 “ı͗3by” Delta), the capital of the Ramesside kings 𓇓𓏏𓈖 “nsw” only to be moved again, two hundred 𓍣 years later, to Tanis 𓆓𓂝𓈖𓏏𓊖 “ḏˁn.t” where the kings of Dynasties 21 and 22 resided.
Traces of repair on the sides of the throne suggest that the lower part of the statue was broken during transport. The statue remained at Tanis until it was uncovered in the early nineteenth century.
