On this day, 23 April 1918, a massive general strike was held in Ireland in protest at the threat of conscription to the British army during World War I. Railways, docks, factories, mills, theatres, cinemas, trams, public services, shipyards, newspapers, shops and arms factories closed, and the anti-conscription movement grew. A conscription law was introduced, but not one person was drafted.
