Thanatos

Thanatos is the personification of Death in Greek mythology. He is the son of Nyx (Night) and the twin brother of Hypnos (Sleep). Some sources also name Erebus (Darkness) as his father. As the personification of Death, Thanatos works under Hades’ command and carries humans off to the Underworld once the time allotted to them by the Fates has expired.

California’s attorney general is investigating oil and gas companies for allegedly deceiving the public that most plastic can be recycled, citing NPR and PBS Frontline’s investigation of the industry.

Accusing the country’s largest oil and gas companies of “a half-century campaign of deception,” California’s attorney general opened an investigation Thursday into the possible role the companies played promoting the idea that plastics could be recycled, in an effort to manipulate the public to buy more of it.

Attorney General Rob Bonta said the fossil fuel industry benefited financially from the industry’s misleading statements which he said go back decades. Bonta has so far subpoenaed ExxonMobil seeking information and documents.

“For more than half a century, the plastics industry has engaged in an aggressive campaign to deceive the public, perpetuating a myth that recycling can solve the plastics crisis,” Bonta said. “The truth is: The vast majority of plastic cannot be recycled.”

The announcement cited NPR and the PBS series Frontline’s 2020 investigation into the oil and gas industry which uncovered documents showing top officials knew that recycling plastic was unlikely to work but spent tens of millions of dollars telling the public the opposite. Starting in the 1980s, the industry launched dozens of ads, nonprofits, and campaigns touting the benefits of recycling plastic – and placing the responsibility on consumers – even as their own documents warned that recycling was “infeasible” and that there was “serious doubt” that plastic recycling “can ever be made viable on an economic basis,” the investigation found.  …

In just a couple of weeks, Michigan will have the best view of a total lunar eclipse since January 20, 2019.

It will be a little more comfortable this time, since it’s not happening in the dead of winter.

On the night of Sunday, May 15th, a partial lunar eclipse will begin at 10:28 p.m. The maximum total eclipse (when the moon turns red) occurs at 12:11 a.m.  The partial eclipse then ends at 1:55 a.m. Monday, May 16th.

The totality of the eclipse will last about 1 hour 25 minutes; roughly from 11:30 p.m. EDT until 12:50 a.m.

The next total lunar eclipse we’ll be able to see from Michigan will be the morning of election day; Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

After that, we won’t see another one until March 13, 2025.

Ohio Republican Says Pregnancy Resulting From Rape Is an ‘Opportunity’

In a legislative hearing on Wednesday, the bill’s sponsor, Republican State Rep. Jean Schmidt, defended the legislation’s lack of an exception for victims of rape.

“It is a shame that it happens, but there’s an opportunity for that woman, no matter how young or old she is, to make a determination about what she’s going to do to help that life be a productive human being,” Schmidt said.

The lawmaker was responding to a question by Democratic State Rep. Richard Brown, who asked Schmidt about a hypothetical scenario in which a 13-year-old girl became pregnant due to rape.

What the fuck do you think a 13 year old rape victim is going to be able to do for an unwanted unplanned child? She’s going to drop out of school spend all her waking hours in a low paying job where she’s exploited they’re both going to grow up in poverty likely live miserable unfulfilling lives where they’re continually used as drones to serve other apathetic people’s happiness. The purpose of a human life isn’t to be productive to “contribute back” to a society which has given them nothing at all it’s to find a little slice of joy for oneself.

On this day, 29 April 1982, 300 mainly South Asian women machinists were on strike in protest at the sacking of two male union activists and over low wages at the Supreme Quilting clothing factory in Smethwick, West Midlands. After a prolonged dispute, during which they also picketed the plant of a sister company, Raindi Textiles, 24-hours a day, they went back to work after achieving promises of union recognition, although the two men remained sacked.
