Nuclear Kaijune

Funny you should say that! The initial inspiration for this series was when I watched EmpLemon’s video essay on Stanislav Petrov, which sparked a temporary fixation on atomic warfare for me. I ended up watching several videos on the history and effects of nuclear bombs and nuclear energy, one of which was a video about the history of fallout shelters, which led me to search for the original Duck and Cover PSA. Like you, upon hearing those familiar words, I instantly remembered the old “Cartoon Network Groovies” they used to air between shows, my favorite being the remixed version of the Atom Ant theme song:

I always liked this kind of surreal cut-and-paste scrapbook aesthetic (I dunno if this style has a particular name), similar to the illustrations of Lane Smith (of The Stinky Cheese Man and Math Curse fame). As a kid I found it weird, ugly, and often creepy looking, but in a oddly compelling way that kept bringing me back.

As for what inspired the individual pictures: the first one is of course inspired by one of the proposals for long-term nuclear waste warnings, specifically the “spike field” where a forest of massive concrete spikes would be built around a nuclear dump site as a warning for future generations.

The second image is a bit more obscure- it’s based off of a rather vivid description I recall from my childhood when learning about atomic bombs for the first time. My teacher told us that the flash was so bright that just looking at it would “make your eyeballs melt and run down your face like marshmallows”. Which is… mostly inaccurate, but either way it was a grisly mental image that stuck with me ever since.

And of course, the third one is a fucked-up, kiaju-ified version of Bert the Turtle, with a bit more inspiration from the ever-so-talented Trevor Henderson and his monster paintings, with my favorites of his being the colossal giants that loom over buildings and mountains. They don’t get nearly as much love as Siren Head or Cartoon Cat, but the Titans are awesome anyway.

Either way, I hope you all enjoyed this little peek into my creative process!
