CNN hasn’t covered the more than 23 people killed in protests against UN troops in Congo, instead…
Local journalists have reported that UN “peacekeeping” troops fired live ammunition on protesters in Congo (DRC) yesterday. At least 15 people were killed, including 12 civilians and 3 UN troops, amidst ongoing protests calling for the UN mission MONUSCA to leave.
Protesters are fed-up with MONUSCA which has been embroiled in a series of scandals during its 22-year presence and failed in it’s ultimate mission to restore peace in three regions of the country.
MONUSCO has over 17,000 personnel in the DRC and it’s budget this year is $1.1bn, making it the world’s most expensive “peacekeeping” force.
The latest protests began after Senate President Modeste Bahati Lukwebo said it was time for MONUSCO to “pack its bags”.
DRC has been the epicenter of the UN’s sexual abuse epidemic and has the highest proportion of sexual abuse and exploitation victims at the hands of UN troops.
