Meet the black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas)! This canid lives in Africa, where it prefers arid and open terrain. Populations of this jackal can be found in eastern and southern regions of the continent, including Kenya, Somalia, Botswana, and South Africa. To take down large prey, like an impala, it works with a pack to single out a target from its herd and take turns tiring it out before taking it down. It also hunts alone or in pairs to pounce on smaller prey such as rodents and lizards. It’s not above scavenging, either. Upon finding a big carcass, it might save bits of meat for a later meal by burying pieces throughout its range.

Happy first day of #SharkWeek! We’re kicking things off in a big way, with the megalodon! The prehistoric behemoth had the strongest bite force of any known animal, including T. rex. But these two megapredators never met.🦈🦖
The megalodon evolved just 23 million years ago–that’s long after large dinosaurs went extinct. This extinct shark lived until 3.6 million years ago, meaning it shared the planet with early hominids and overlapped with the great white shark for about a million years! See this life-size megalodon model and explore the underwater world of these amazing animals in the Museum’s special exhibition Sharks, which includes footage from @Discovery’s @SharkWeek! Link in bio for more details on our Sharks exhibition.

The sudden realization that it’s nearing the end of July might have you relating to this Buffy Fish Owl (Bubo ketupu).😧
🦉This bird of prey lives in parts of Southeast Asia including Malaysia, Burma, and Laos. It inhabits tropical forests close to water so that it has access to its favorite foods: fish, frogs, and crustaceans. The undersides of its toes are rough and may aid in grasping slippery prey!

📰NEWS: T. rex is still king! A recent study led by paleontologists at the American Museum of Natural History, the @edinburghuniversity, and @carthagecollege refutes a provocative claim made earlier this year that fossils classified as the dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex belong to three separate species.
🦖The rebuttal, published in the journal Evolutionary Biology, finds that the earlier proposal lacks sufficient evidence to split up the iconic species. Read more about their findings with the link in our bio.

Are you trying to find ways to stay cool during the heat waves this summer? Here’s how the painted reed frog (Hyperolius marmoratus) survives when it gets too hot: It rests motionless on a leaf in a tightly-wound position which helps it retain body moisture and reduce its exposure to the Sun. It can also enter a hibernation-like state, known as aestivation, in which its metabolism rate drops by 50%! And special cells in its skin, called iridophores, reflect sunlight, resulting in a silvery-white color and acting as a sunscreen. You can spot this frog in parts of Africa including Gabon, Mozambique, and South Africa.
