On this day, 13 August 2000, German resistance activist and communist Ria Deeg died aged 92. A house worker, then later a book trade apprentice, she began working in the underground resistance following the Nazi takeover. She produced and distributed leaflets, and collective aid for political prisoners. She was arrested and jailed for 38 months for high treason, and was only released under intensive police surveillance. She survived the war and remained active, fighting capitalism and fascism until the end.
