On this day, 1 September 2007, The Guardian newspaper published an article revealing that Indian soldiers based in what is now Pakistan had chemical weapons tested on them by the British colonial administration from the 1930s onwards. Large numbers of Indians suffered burns in the tests carried out by scientists from Porton Down, which were apparently carried out to see if mustard gas inflicted greater damage on South Asian skin rather than white skin.
