“The ordeals of Egyptian initiation took place in vast underground temples; thence neophytes who gave way to fear never again returned, but the adepts who came forth victorious received the key of all religious mysteries, and the first great revelation, given to him in a flying whisper, was contained in the formula: Osiris is a Black God. That is to say, the God adorned by the profane is but the shadow of the true God.”

Earlier this month, Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh participated in a “Song Stories” event at the Sonos Store in New York City which paid tribute to David Bowie nearly two years after his passing from cancer. During Mothersbaugh’s segment, he revealed the existence of an unreleased recording containing a jam session featuring members of Devo, Brian Eno, and the Thin White Duke.

According to Bedford + Bowery, the story came up when Mothersbaugh shared that he’s unearthed several tapes from the recording sessions for Devo’s debut album, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, which was produced by Eno with assistance from Bowie. Apparently, Devo’s bassist had missed a flight “because he was fighting with his girlfriend on an airport pay phone,” so everyone else at Conny Plank’s studio in Cologne, Germany made the best of it. “Devo jammed with David Bowie, Brian Eno, Holger Czukay [of Can], and a couple other odd Germans that were electronic musicians that happened to be hanging out there,”…

Scientists have launched a major new phase in the testing of a controversial genetically modified organism: a mosquito designed to quickly spread a genetic mutation lethal to its own species, NPR has learned.

For the first time, researchers have begun large-scale releases of the engineered insects, into a high-security laboratory in Terni, Italy.

“This will really be a breakthrough experiment,” says Ruth Mueller, an entomologist who runs the lab. “It’s a historic moment.”

The goal is to see if the mosquitoes could eventually provide a powerful new weapon to help eradicate malaria in Africa, where most cases occur.

“It’s very exciting,” Mueller says.

NPR was the only news organization allowed into the lab to witness the moment the releases began in early February.
