End of December 1905 – the first Russian revolution and street fighting in Moscow. The days when Soviets of Workers appeared for the first time. Here’s some rules published in December 1905 by militant wing of Moscow Bolsheviks.

“Comrades! Street fighting has begun between the insurgent workers and the troops/police. Many of our brothers, freedom fighters, may die in this struggle, if all of you do not follow some rules. The militant organization of the Moscow Committee of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party would like to inform you about the rules and asks you to strictly follow them.

1. The main rule – DO NOT ACT IN A CROWD. Act in small groups, no more than three or four people. There should be as more dispersed groups as possible. And let each of them learn to attack quickly and quickly disappear. Hundred policemen shoot at a crowd of thousands. But you are to place one or two shooters against hundred policemen. It is easier to hit a hundred than one, especially if your shooter fires unexpectedly and quickly disappears. The police and troops will be powerless if all of Moscow is covered by these small, elusive troops.

2. Moreover, comrades, DO NOT OCCUPY fortified buildings and other places. Troops will always be able to seize them or simply destroy them with artillery. Let our fortresses be courtyards with double exits and all places from which it is easy to shoot and easy to leave. If they seize such a place, they won’t find anyone there, but they will lose a lot. All of them cannot be seized, because for this every house must be populated with cops.

3. Therefore, comrades, if someone calls you to gather in a large crowd and take a fortified place, consider him an idiot or a provocateur. If this is an idiot - do not listen him, if a provocateur – kill him. Always tell everyone that it is better for us to act individually or in groups of two-three comrades. It is better for police to shoot us when we gather in thousands.

4. Avoid also visiting big meetings or rallies. We will see them soon in a free state, but now we need to fight and only fight. The government understands this very well and uses our meetings to beat and disarm us.

5. Gather better in small groups for combat conferences, each in your neighbourhood, and at the first appearance of the troops – disperse via courtyards. Shoot from the courtyards, throw stones, then climb over to the neighboring courtyard and leave the area.

6. Strictly distinguish your conscious enemies from unconscious ones. Kill the first, save lives of others. Do not touch rank-and-file soldiers if possible. The soldiers are the children of the people and will not fight against the people of their own free will. They are being ordered by officers and higher authorities. You are to act against these officers and superiors. Every officer leading his soldiers to slaughter the workers is declared an enemy of the people and outlawed. Kill them unconditionally.”
