April 6, Amsterdam - The Antifascists (2017) documentary screening + discussion

Doors open: 7pm, film screening: 8pm

The far right is on the rise. So much so, that listing the countries, in which this takes place, doesn’t even make sense anymore at this point. Being at the losing end of globalization, feeling disconnected, alienated and exploited, people turn towards ideologies that promise salvation through ethnical community, strong leadership and national egoism. The results are highly xenophobic, dehumanizing and authoritarian political movements that quickly grow in power.

The historical parallels to the periods prior to the world wars are striking. Björn Höcke (spokesperson “Alternative für Deutschland”), just to emphasize this point, openly talks about the cleansing of the German people in his new book, in which he describes his vision of a “new Germany”.

Yet, the public seems vastly unconcerned. The new-right political parties in Europe seem to be treated as basically democratic parties that “get carried away” on some points. The excess and the violence of the first half of the 20th century, and how quickly it manifested, seems forgotten.

The documentary “The Antifascists” shows how this violence is already present in European streets. It discusses instances of right-wing politically-motivated attacks in Greece and Sweden and explores how these are experienced by people affected, and/or involved in the effort to prevent them. It shows quite shockingly how the justice system and police are either unwilling or unable to control this situation and it raises the question of adequate counter strategies.

This question could well be amongst the most important questions of our current time and we would like to discuss it with you following the movie screening.

remember this whenever politicians start advertising themselves as “tough on crime” or start talking about a crime wave all of a sudden.

I know I don’t have a ton of followers, but just a reminder that there are currently prisoners striking in America over forced labor in the prison system, which is basically a firm of legal slavery.

You can personally thank Marco Rubio for the laws allowing this; he drafted some of the first private prison legislature in FL which was then used as the base contract for other states with GEO group and CCA. (The two major for profit prison groups. I’m pretty sure one of them got taken out by a lawsuit but I forget which.)

Basically if their quota falls below 90% capacity, they legally sue the state for not providing them with a “product.” Which is, usually, lower income Americans of color.

Also, the Supreme Court decided in Bevins v. Six Unnamed Agents of FBI, that American citizens do NOT have the right to sue private prisons for violations of the 1st amendment.

The country is fucked and it’s the fault of greedy politicians.
