An excerpt from Dan Wallbank’s story of the same title, published in WEREWOLVES VERSUS: THE 1990s.

Margie Gunderson loped on all fours down the snow-covered road that gave access to the water-front lots at Moose Lake’s West shore. Thick stands of birch and pine blurred by to either side, cold and dormant after an unusually harsh Minnesotan winter. Narrow clearings punctuated the bush line, driveways down which light from cheery windows spilled forth. She felt the chilly rush of the late-November air ruffle her fur as she ran, rich with the scent of fallen needles, wood smoke, and the blood and guts of today’s ice-fishing catch. The squeak and crunch of wet snow beneath her shaggy paws was a rhythmic chant in her ears.

A cardinal, or maybe a jay, complained from somewhere deep in the brush. Norm would probably know what it was.

The events of the last week rattled around her mind like the contents of the kitchen junk drawer. A State Trooper killed, with two civilians executed, likely for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. A car with dealer plates was involved, probably stolen. Lundegaard, the sales manager at a local dealership, fled a deposition regarding same. The town of Brainerd hadn’t seen this much excitement since, well heck, since Baby Face Nelson and his gang paid First National a visit back in ‘33.

A flash of chrome between snow-laden branches pulled her out of this reverie. Marge slowed, stopped, and padded quietly back to the driveway leading up to a gaudy yellow bungalow, low-slung and boxy in the style that was inexplicably popular in the ‘70s… and a light brown sedan with tag number ‘DLR 4763’.

There it is! Tan Sierra!
