3,000-Year-Old Wooden Toe Prosthetic Discovered on Egyptian Mummy

A single big toe is revealing significant information about ancient medicine.

That’s because the toe is a 3,000-year-old wooden prosthesis, which was found attached to a female mummy in an ancient Egyptian grave site. Researchers think the toe is one of the world’s oldest prosthetic devices. And now, further examination of the prosthesis has divulged even more information about the one-of-a-kind artifact and the time from which it came. Technologies like modern microscopy, X-rays and computer imaging enabled a team of researchers to determine the materials and method used to make the prosthetic.

For instance, their new research, which is still unpublished, found that the wooden toe was refitted several times.

Based on the meticulous construction of the ancient prosthesis, the researchers determined the wearer — a priest’s daughter — wanted the toe to look natural and be comfortable to wear. Read more.

By using a camera and computer vision software it is possible to make a fish control a robot car over land. By swimming towards an interesting object, the fish can explore the world beyond the limits of his tank. Via Studio diip

We really are a police state.

It’s worse than that. That wasn’t a rubber bullet, that was another tear gas canister–you can see it a few seconds later in the footage when the camera pans over to the advancing cops.

And they shot him in the crotch with it.

If I were feeling charitable I’d say that the cop who fired the shell was aiming for center of mass and miscalculated the distance and hit the guy low.

But I’m not feeling charitable. It’s clear that was a deliberate malicious attack designed to hurt the guy as badly as possible with the weapon at hand. The goal was to cause him pain and intimidate bystanders.

this really is dystopic, isn’t it?

Shout out to the dude who came and helped him up

THIS IS WHY YOU BLACK BLOC. WHEN EVERYONE IS MASKED AND IN ALL BLOC, IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE POLICE TO TARGET INDIVIDUALS LIKE THIS

MASK UP, COME IN BLOC, BE PREPARED, YOU. COULD SAVE SOMEONES LIFE

Also get to know your street medics and maybe buy them a drink later. They’ll often be the ones picking you up and making sure you’re good after this shit happens

Theresa May said Sir Kim’s departure was “a matter of deep regret” after the ambassador said it was “impossible” for him to continue.

Tory leadership candidate Boris Johnson has faced strong criticism for failing to fully support him.

President Trump said on Monday that the US would not deal with Sir Kim.

The US president had branded him “a very stupid guy” after confidential emails emerged where the ambassador had called his administration “clumsy and inept”.

In a letter to the Foreign Office, Sir Kim said he wanted to end speculation about his position: “The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.”

His resignation has prompted widespread support for Sir Kim as well as criticism of Tory frontrunner Boris Johnson.

According to some Whitehall sources, Sir Kim decided to resign after Mr Johnson refused to support him during the Tory leadership debate on Tuesday night, said BBC diplomatic correspondent James Landale.

Mr Johnson was asked repeatedly by fellow leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt whether he would keep Sir Kim in post if he became prime minister, but refused to answer.

It is understood Mr Johnson spoke to Sir Kim on the phone on Wednesday afternoon.

Following Sir Kim’s resignation, Mr Johnson said he was “a superb diplomat” and whoever was responsible for the leak “has done a grave disservice to our civil servants”.

Asked why he was not more supportive of Sir Kim, he said it was “wrong to drag civil servants into the political arena”.

Europe Minister Sir Alan Duncan - who backs Mr Hunt in the leadership contest - said it was “contemptible negligence” of Mr Johnson not to support Sir Kim.

“He’s basically thrown this fantastic diplomat under a bus to serve his own personal interests,” he said.

However, Sir Michael Fallon - a supporter of Mr Johnson - told BBC Newsnight Sir Kim’s position became untenable “long before the debate on Tuesday night” and he understands the ambassador did not watch it.

On this day, 11 July 1945, anti-fascist Spanish civil war fighter Agustín Soler, who had been jailed in an internment camp alongside Nazis in Britain, killed himself in protest. Scores of Spanish anti-fascist exiles, many of whom later fought in the French resistance, were detained by Allied forces after the defeat of the Axis and thrown into British prison camps alongside their former fascist enemies by the Conservative government. Upon its election, the Labour government continued the detention of Spanish anti-fascists, and defended it in parliament, claiming that they were “serving members of an enemy paramilitary organisation”. After Fox News host Tucker Carlson Tuesday night launched a xenophobic tirade accusing Rep. Ilhan Omar of showing “undisguised contempt for the United States and for its people” by criticizing the nation’s systemic injustices, Omar mocked Carlson as a “racist fool” and said he will “just have to get used to calling me congresswoman.”

“Not gonna lie, it’s kinda fun watching a racist fool like this weeping about my presence in Congress,” wrote Omar, a Somali refugee and one of two Muslim women ever elected to Congress.

“No lies will stamp out my love for this country,” added the congresswoman from Minnesota, “or my resolve to make our union more perfect.”

Carlson’s attack on Omar was described as “outrageously racist” even by his standards.

“Advertisers need to wake up,” tweeted advocacy group Sleeping Giants. “By financially supporting this show and the people who rubber stamp these messages, you are sponsoring white supremacy. Full stop.”

In his rant Tuesday night, Carlson described Omar as “living proof that the way we practice immigration has become dangerous to this country” and accused the Minnesota congresswoman and other migrants of “undermining” the United States.

Carlson was apparently referencing a recent Washington Post profile that quoted Omar as telling high school students, “I grew up in an extremely unjust society, and the only thing that made my family excited about coming to the United States was that the United States was supposed to be the country that guaranteed justice to all. So, I feel it necessary for me to speak about that promise that’s not kept.”

Andrew Lawrence, deputy director of rapid response for Media Matters for America, said he watches Carlson’s show every night as part of his job. Carlson’s latest tirade, Lawrence tweeted, “is probably the most racist shit this guy has said on his show and he’s said a lot of racist shit.”
