Tutankhamun’s meteoric iron dagger
King Tutankhamun’s dagger is out of this world – literally.
“The nickel and cobalt ratio in the dagger blade is consistent with that of iron meteorites that have preserved the primitive chondritic ratio during planetary differentiation in the early solar system.”
When archaeologist Howard Carter found Tutankhamun’s tomb, he described the knife as a “highly ornamented gold dagger with a crystal knob.”The weapon, which is on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, was made from a non-rusted homogenous metal with a gold handle.

Literally translating as “That Water”, the name Tefnut has been linked to the verb ‘tfn’ meaning ‘to spit’. Detail of a wall carving from the Double Temple of Sobek and Haroeris, Kom Ombo.

Floating islands in Norway. While bizarre, the phenomenon of floating islands is fairly common around the world. Composed of aquatic plants, mud, and other detritus, they’re generally capable of supporting not only a varied aquatic community below, but also small trees and species above. They tend to form when plants like cattails or reeds extend out into deeper water and are torn loose from shore by storms. Some have been known to last only a season, while others endure for decades or longer. (Source)

On this day, 17 July 1936, a Spanish military uprising began in Morocco as right wing generals declared war on the new Republican government. In Barcelona workers began to respond as members of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), seized 200 rifles from the holds of 2 ships docked in the harbour and distributed them to union activists. These events marked the beginning of the Spanish civil war - and full-scale revolution would break out in the coming days. In this podcast we tell the story of the conflict: https://workingclasshistory.com/2018/07/29/spanish-civil-war-podcast/
