Plumb Level of Sennedjem

This wooden plumb level consists of two short pieces projecting at right angles from a longer slab. A limestone bob is strung from the top of the long slab and the upper short projecting wooden piece.

The string would touch the lower projecting piece when the long slab was held against a vertical surface. This tool bears the name of its owner, Sennedjem, who was a chief artisan during the reigns of Seti I and Ramesses II.

From the tomb of Sennedjem (TT1). New Kingdom, 19th Dynasty, ca. 1250 BC. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 27260

It’s been a month since the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team won a second straight World Cup, and gained rock star popularity in the process.

Since the win, the goal has been to capitalize on that success.

U.S. Soccer Federation president Carlos Cordeiro has been at odds with the women’s team on issues of pay and working conditions. Still, Cordeiro understands the importance of maintaining USWNT momentum.

“If you love these players of the World Cup,” he said at a victory celebration in New York City, “then come out and cheer on your local teams, NWSL teams, this year.”

The NWSL is the women’s pro soccer league in the U.S. Now in its seventh year, it helped develop the World Cup heroes – all 23 who went to France, play in the league. But it’s still somewhat unknown.

Five Record-Setting Gamma-ray Bursts!

nasa:

For 10 years, our Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has scanned the sky for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the universe’s most luminous explosions!

image

Most GRBs occur when some types of massive stars run out of fuel and collapse to create new black holes. Others happen when two neutron stars, superdense remnants of stellar explosions, merge. Both kinds of cataclysmic events create jets of particles that move near the speed of light.

A new catalog of the highest-energy blasts provides scientists with fresh insights into how they work. Below are five record-setting events from the catalog that have helped scientists learn more about GRBs:

1. Super-short burst in Boötes!

image

The short burst 081102B, which occurred in the constellation Boötes on Nov. 2, 2008, is the briefest LAT-detected GRB, lasting just one-tenth of a second!

2. Long-lived burst!

image

Long-lived burst 160623A, spotted on June 23, 2016, in the constellation Cygnus, kept shining for almost 10 hours at LAT energies — the longest burst in the catalog.

For both long and short bursts, the high-energy gamma-ray emission lasts longer than the low-energy emission and happens later.

3. Highest energy gamma-rays!

image

The highest-energy individual gamma ray detected by Fermi’s LAT reached 94 billion electron volts (GeV) and traveled 3.8 billion light-years from the constellation Leo. It was emitted by 130427A, which also holds the record for the most gamma rays — 17 — with energies above 10 GeV.

4. In a constellation far, far away!

image

The farthest known GRB occurred 12.2 billion light-years away in the constellation Carina. Called 080916C, researchers calculate the explosion contained the power of 9,000 supernovae.

5. Probing the physics of our cosmos!

image

The known distance to 090510 helped test Einstein’s theory that the fabric of space-time is smooth and continuous. Fermi detected both a high-energy and a low-energy gamma ray at nearly the same instant. Having traveled the same distance in the same amount of time, they showed that all light, no matter its energy, moves at the same speed through the vacuum of space.

Group Statue of Ramesses III with Horus and Seth

The group represents King Ramesses III, the god Horus and the god Seth. The three statues are standing and are all approximately the same height. The statue of the king is between the other two, which are represented in profile.

Ramesses III is wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt with the royal cobra on the front, a wide collar of many rows, named Ousekh, and the royal pleated kilt, the shendyt, with a long belt hanging down to the bottom of it. He is holding the ankh sign of life in his right hand and the roll of power in his left hand. His left leg is forward.

The statues of the gods, Horus and Seth, are in the same posture with the left leg forward; they are each holding the ankh, and wearing the Egyptian pectoral and the shendyt kilt. Each god has placed one hand on the crown of the king, performing the Coronation of Ramesses III.

According to the mythology, after the death of Osiris and the end of the war between Horus and Seth, the gods swore Egypt and the Nile valley to Horus and Seth was the ruler of the Deserts and foreign lands. Hence we see the double coronation of Ramesses III as king of Egypt and Foreign Lands.

Granite, from Medinet Habu. New Kingdom, 20th Dynasty, reign of Ramesses III, ca. 1186-1155 BC. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 31628
