On this day, 17 November 1983, 6 people founded the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. So if you know 5 people who think like you, set up a group! This is a detailed history and analysis of the organisation: https://ift.tt/23JMzVT

On this day, 4 September 1838, revolutionary and Paris Communard Victorine Brocher-Rouchy was born. She worked as an ambulance driver, and when the Commune was attacked she fought on the barricades during the bloody week and was sentenced to death for burning down the Court of Accounts. Thankfully she managed to escape to Switzerland and London, although her husband did not, and died in captivity. Over a decade later she remarried, and adopted five orphans of the Commune, and then remained active until the end of her life in 1921. This is her short biography: https://libcom.org/history/brocher-rouchy-victorine-1838-1921 https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1202652939919854/?type=3

DIY bamboo+hemp bike frame
I saw a picture of a bamboo bike and decided I had to have one. I found out that professionally built bamboo frames cost a few thousand dollars so I decided to build one myself. I had a lot of fun and I hope that you can make one too by following these instructions.
The bike I made is a track bike for commuting to work. The bicycle was inspired by Craig Calfee who makes much nicer bamboo bikes. I really wanted something with a minimum of fancy technology and carbon fiber (although I sprang for the carbon fork). I used epoxy and hemp fibers on all the joints (no pun intended). The track bike also makes it easy in that it is a very simple bike - no gears, cable routings, rear brake or derailers.
Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Friday finalized rules that make it more difficult for federal student loan borrowers to cancel their debt on the grounds that their college defrauded them, scaling back an Obama-era policy aimed at abuses by for-profit colleges.
The rules, which the Trump administration weighed for more than a year, set a more stringent standard for when the Education Department will wipe out the debt of borrowers who claim they were misled or deceived by their respective colleges.
Hmm now why oh why would the Trump administration want to scale back rules that go after predatory for-profit schools that defraud their students by offering them worthless degrees??

On this day, 29 July 1962, fascist Oswald Mosley attempted to march through Manchester. However he was attacked by anti-fascists who knocked him to the ground, and had to be rescued and escorted by 250 police, who were unable to prevent the fascist being pelted with tomatoes, eggs, coins and stones. Following the March Mosley attempted to speak but he was drowned out by a crowd of 5000 anti-fascists who forced police to call off the meeting after just seven minutes. Clashes between local residents and Blackshirts continued for some time, and the police arrested 47 people.
We are working on a podcast episode about struggles against Mosley. Were you involved in any of these protests, or do you know an older friend or relative who was?
