On this day, 30 May 1381 a tax collector called John Bampton attempted to collect Poll Tax in Brentwood, Essex, and ended up sparking the Peasant’s Revolt. The mass uprising took until November for the government to suppress. A little over 600 years later, Thatcher’s Conservative government tried to bring in a new poll tax and sparked another rebellion which brought down the tax and Thatcher herself.
