Yesterday on Oct 29 2019, activists who entered the Toronto Public Library, during library hours, were barred inside the building by Toronto Police who offered to provide protection for people wishing to attend Meghan Murphy’s transphobic and transmisogynistic event series. Among those held inside by police was newly awarded Anishinaabe and Metis poet Gwen Benaway, who just received the Governor General’s Literary Award only one night prior.
Now that the US has recognized the Armenian genocide because it’s suddenly politically convenient, let’s remember how Turkey set up an astroturf campaign in New York a few years ago about hashtag fact checking Armenia and they had people on fucking pogo sticks and wrote fact check Armenia in the skies
On this day, 3 October 1952, the UK conducted its first-ever atomic bomb test on the Monte Bello Islands, off the coast of Western Australia, with no concern for the Aboriginal people living nearby. Decades later a Royal Commission that admitted “The presence of Aborigines on the mainland near Monte Bello Islands and their extra vulnerability to the effect of fallout was not recognised by either [Atomic Weapons Research Establishment – UK] or the Safety Committee. It was a major oversight that the question of acceptable dose levels for Aborigines was recognised as a problem at Maralinga but was ignored in setting the fallout criteria for the Mosaic tests.”
