Model of a Cattle Census
This large model shows a courtyard where the inspection of cattle took place. Meketre, his son, and four scribes sit under a columned canopy with scribes and guards standing nearby.
Cattle are driven before them by several farmers and herdsmen in order to be counted for inspection purposes. All men are wearing short kilts and the farmers who drive the cattle are wearing long wigs and holding sticks.
Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, ca. 1981-1975 BC. From the Tomb of Meketre (TT280), Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 46724

People living in Garin, Argentina have been using recycled waste materials to harvest solar energy to heat their water. Garin is a poor neighbourhood, one of many in Argentina, where people sometimes have no electricity or hot water. The system they’re using provides hot water all day long, and is home made from waste drinks bottles, soda cans, and milk cartons.
The solar heaters are part of an initiative by Argentinian non-profit organisation Sumando Energías, who also provide two day workshops to locals who want to learn how to make their own.
“This is a poor neighbourhood and sometimes we have no light or water. These recycled solar panels help us a lot, we have children and it’s useful having […] hot water even though we have no electricity.”
– Luis Alberto Quinona, Garin resident
On this day, 2 September 2005, just after hurricane Katrina, New Orleans police officer David Warren gunned down Henry Glover, an unarmed African-American man who was picking up baby clothes. Some members of the public tried to assist Glover, but they were physically attacked by police officers. Another officer, Gregory McRae, then drove Glover away in a civilian’s car, then setting the car containing the body on fire. He was observed by a fellow officer laughing while he did this. Five police officers were subsequently charged. Warren was originally convicted of manslaughter and jailed, but later won an appeal and was acquitted. Tragically this was just one of many racist police murders and abuses in the wake of hurricane Katrina.

Your Yankee communities aren’t special, there’s racism and queerphobia and labor exploitation in the whole ass America. It’s the whole thing that’s gone over.
