Canopic Chest of Tutankhamun
This alabaster canopic chest is considered to be one of the finest masterpieces of Tutankhamun’s collection. The interior of the chest is divided into four compartments, each with a cylindrical hollow covered by a lid elegantly carved in the form of the king’s head.
The lid was fixed to the chest with cords knotted to gold rings and bore the official seal of the royal necropolis. Within each compartment was a miniature gold mummiform coffin that held the king’s embalmed internal organs.
At the four corners of the chest, carved in high relief, are four goddesses: Isis, Nephthys, Neith and Serket, who stretch out their arms to protect the contents of the chest.

On this day, 28 December 1907, 10,000 households in New York City went on rent strike against rent price hikes. The action was sparked by 16-year-old textile worker Pauline Newman, who enlisted 400 other young female factory workers to help persuade other families to join in. Landlords fought back with water shut offs and revenge evictions, but the families stood firm, and by early January around 2000 households won reduced rents.

On this day, 3 October 1935, Ethiopia (one of the only two independent African nations at the time) was invaded by fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini. The Italians committed countless atrocities, including the use of: poisonous gas, aerial bombardment, and concentration camps. While Italy and Ethiopia were both members of the League of Nations, the league did nothing about the Italian violation of its principles. But at the grassroots, Black outrage throughout the world was unified, and many Black men and women volunteered to go fight in defense of Ethiopia.
