Royal Cubit Rod Donated by Amenhotep II
An ornamental wood rod overlaid with gold from the funerary chamber of Kha and presented to him by Amenhotep II, in honor of his work. It is decorated with dedication hieroglyphs on the two ends and on four surfaces, including the bevel face, the top, back, and bottom.
The single scale is on the front surface. This rod is in sharp contrast with undecorated specimen, both from Kha, and both found in his funerary chamber. The contrast provides some insight into the differences between daily life and religious observations. Another folding wood rod, found in its original leather case.
New Kingdom, mid 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep II, ca. 1427-1401 BC. Gilded wood. From the Tomb chamber of Kha (TT8), Deir el-Medina, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum of Turin. Cat. 8647, Cat. 8391

Voting in the Democratic presidential nominating contest is about to kick off Monday with the Iowa caucuses.
The stakes are high in Iowa — the last four Democratic nominees have all won the Hawkeye State. But after about a year of campaigning and $50 million spent here by the candidates, the outcome is unclear.
Here are some answers to key questions about the caucuses.
When are the Iowa caucuses?
7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET
How long should they last?
About an hour, maybe less this year, because of a rules change where there are only two rounds of caucusing.
When should we expect results?
The first results are expected to start coming in by 8:45 p.m. ET or so. It could take longer if results are close.

China says it has more than 17,000 confirmed cases of the Wuhan coronavirus, representing a huge leap from the 4,400 cases reported as of last week. Chinese health officials said Monday morning that 2,829 new cases had been diagnosed in the past 24 hours alone.
Outside of mainland China, nine countries or regions are reporting double-digit cases of the coronavirus, led by Japan with 20, according to a global dashboard created by the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering.
The respiratory virus has killed more than 360 people. The first coronavirus fatality outside China was reported in the Philippines over the weekend.
In a sign of the economic toll, China’s stock markets were pummeled Monday — the first day of trading since the Lunar New Year holiday — with the Shanghai Composite Index falling by nearly 8%. Trading was halted for hundreds of Chinese companies after prices for their stocks dropped by 10% — triggering a mandatory hold.

The ultimate aim of government is not to rule, or restrain, by fear, nor to exact obedience, but, contrariwise, to free every man from fear, that he may live in all possible security; in other words, to strengthen his natural right to exist and work without injury to himself or others. — Baruch Spinoza, Tractatus Theologico-Politicus (via philosophybits)
