On this day, 8 February 1968, the Orangeburg massacre took place in South Carolina when police opened fire on Black SC State students, killing three and wounding 27 as Black students protested at a segregated bowling alley - the first student demonstrators killed by police in the ‘60s, and much less well-known than the Kent State killings of white students. On this day, 9 February 1912, a group of women workers in Gundry’s net and rope factory in Bridport, Dorset, staged a wildcat strike over pay and conditions. They walked around the town singing suffragette songs, and collected money for a strike fund. They refused arbitration from the local MP, and returned to work the following week after a London trades union official came down to sign them up and settle the dispute.
This is a short history of the strike: https://libcom.org/history/bridport-wildcat-strike-1912 https://www.facebook.com/workingclasshistory/photos/a.296224173896073/1345477872304026/?type=3
