Blu-ray Review: Undertaker

Clocking in at a mere 65 minutes - six of which are end credits - Undertaker plays more like a student film than a conventional feature. For better or worse, the homespun approach extends to the technical aspects; the 2012 Japanese zombie movie was clearly shot on a consumer-grade digital camera by a small and inexperienced yet dedicated cast and crew. But every genre fan knows that you don’t need a big budget or fancy equipment to make an effective horror movie.

Writer-director Naoyoshi Kawamatsu conceived a fairly novel concept for a zombie picture with minimal characters and dialogue. It follows zombie hunter Ryouichi (Yoshito Kobashigawa), who brings closure to grieving families during the zombie apocalypse by hunting and executing their infected loved ones and bringing back a body part of their choosing. Much of the film consists of Ryouichi, wielding a sharpened shovel like a samurai sword, traversing through an infected area in search of one particular ghoul.

What Your Teen Wishes You Knew About Sex Education

Cora Breuner was sitting at home one day about to do a little work on her laptop.

“I remember, when I opened my computer, I looked at my son — who shall remain nameless — and I said, ‘Why is this porn site on my laptop?’”

“I’m an adolescent male, Mom.”

It would have been an awkward moment for just about any parent. Then again, Breuner isn’t just any parent. She’s Doctor Cora Breuner, and she works in the adolescent medicine clinic at Seattle Children’s Hospital. In other words, she is an expert on all the reasons her son had been browsing pornography on her laptop.

On this day, 11 February 1916, Lithuanian-born Jewish anarchist Emma Goldman was arrested in New York City for distributing information on birth control. She was technically charged with breaching the Comstock Act, which banned “obscene” material from the mail or from being transported across state lines. Her arrest came as Goldman was due to deliver a public lecture on family planning, which was a key concern for working class people.
Radicals argued that family planning was essential for working class people to be able to have an acceptable standard of living, and believed that authorities opposed birth control so that there would be an oversupply of labour to keep down wages and fill the army.
We have a collection of Goldman’s writings on sex and gender available here, as well as reproductions of this mugshot: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/all/emma-goldman

Everything You Need To Know About The New Hampshire Primary -

npr:

Democrats are going to try again.

After the Iowa results meltdown, New Hampshire takes center stage Tuesday night. This election is run by the secretary of state’s office and not the state party. It’s also a more-straightforward primary (with a couple kinks we explain below) rather than a complicated, math-heavy caucus.

On this day, 23 November 1969, leading Black Panther Fred Hampton spoke at a meeting organised by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom at the University of Illinois. Among those in attendance was Luis Kutner, a lawyer and co-founder of Amnesty International. Unknown to Hampton, Kutner was an informant for the FBI, who reported on the meeting to his handler, and claimed that Hampton was “ranting and raving” and said that President Nixon was “a member of the ‘capitalistic establishment’” and that “Nixon must die”. Kutner said that he was telling the FBI this because of “its possible violation of Federal law”. A few days later, the FBI had Hampton, aged just 21, drugged and murdered in his sleep.
