More than 60,000 people have signed a new petition calling on Federal Judge Anthony Trenga to release Chelsea Manning.

Chelsea Manning has been incarcerated for more than 11 months for her principled refusal to give testimony before a grand jury convened to investigate and prosecute journalists. She is being held in jail and fined $1,000 per day for up to 18 months or until she agrees to cooperate.

Chelsea has not been charged with any crime, but is being held under “coercive confinement.” The UN Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, considers this to be a violation of international law and has called upon the U.S. Government to release her immediately.

Chelsea has a conscientious objection to all Grand Jury proceedings, due to their secrecy and history of prosecutorial abuse, including a long history of targeting and harassing activist communities.

The petition was organized by Fight For the Future and is backed by several other organizations including Defending Rights & Dissent (DRAD), RootsAction.org, Media Alliance, Daily Kos, Demand Progress and Freedom of the Press Foundation. Prominent musicians including Michael Stipe of REM and Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth have helped amplify the effort, as has Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg.

In the heat of battle, photographer Horace Bristol captured one of the most unique and erotic photos of WWII.

Bristol photographed a young crewman of a US Navy “Dumbo” PBY rescue mission, manning his gun after having stripped naked and jumped into the water of Rabaul Harbor to rescue a badly burned Marine pilot. The Marine was shot down while bombing the Japanese-held fortress of Rabaul.

“…we got a call to pick up an airman who was down in the Bay. The Japanese were shooting at him from the island, and when they saw us they started shooting at us. The man who was shot down was temporarily blinded, so one of our crew stripped off his clothes and jumped in to bring him aboard. He couldn’t have swum very well wearing his boots and clothes. As soon as we could, we took off. We weren’t waiting around for anybody to put on formal clothes. We were being shot at and wanted to get the hell out of there. The naked man got back into his position at his gun in the blister of the plane.”

“And well, there was his butt, and I had a camera. I mean I AM a historian.”

That is the BEST EVER quote about the nature of historians I’ve ever seen

On this day, 19 February 1972, the UK’s miners, who had been on strike for seven weeks, accepted an improved pay offer above the government’s 8% pay cap. The strike had caused rationing of electricity and had forced factories with 1.2 million workers to temporarily close.

Great idea until you have 7th graders in Florida picking your president…. I’m not sure that the people that actually agree to this idea understand that kids would just vote how their parents would because no seventh grader has more than two brain cells. I was in seventh grade when the 2016 election happened, and holy fuck you do not want those kids picking your President, let alone having rights in general

So then maybe, as was the point of this post, maybe the court system shouldn’t be executing 7th graders (most of whom are disproportionately black and brown people)? Because if you don’t think they’re mature enough to vote and pick a president, then I’m guessing that they aren’t mature enough to be tried as adults and then executed???
