I’ve been fascinated with the underground town of Coober Pedy, in Australia, b/c it’s the Opal mining capital of the world, and my birthstone is the Opal. Plus, it’s a very interesting place.

B/c it’s so hot, 80% of the town is underground. You can buy an above-ground house, if you really want one, but all homes are relatively inexpensive.

Shopping is underground.

Bars, coffee shops, & restaurants are also underground.

Churches are underground, too.

You can visit & stay in one of the many motels. This is the lobby of a Comfort Inn.

The covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak is a great example of why conservative governments cutting public health funding and eroding workers rights so they’re forced to work to survive even while sick is a terrible thing. It’s terrible even without a pandemic but a pandemic really highlights just how utterly incompatible conservative ideology is with a robust and well functioning society.

Private hospitals will shut down and stand down thousands of healthcare workers soon unless we pay them to stay open because COVID-19 has gotten rid of their profits.

The government temporarily banned elective surgeries (which are non-emergency surgeries) to stop the spread of COVID-19. Private hospitals make money off those surgeries.

So now… during a global health crisis where we need as many medical resources as possible to save lives… Private Hospitals want to close because there’s too many of the wrong type of sick people around - the type of sick person that isn’t profitable to treat. Why save lives when it costs money, you know?
