1) these are absolutely not supposed to be fired directly at people, they are supposed to be fired indirectly.
2) they can kill and seriously injure people
3) this type of “rubber bullet” (often called a “foam baton” or “rubber baton” round) is a lightweight projectile that will nonetheless fuck you up. I’ve loaded and worked with foam batons and rubber shot for a long time and in all the time I’ve worked with people who were loading and firing rubber bullets with police departments I’ve never encountered any version of a 37 or 40mm baton round that has a “thin layer of rubber over a metal core,” which is a description I’ve seen a lot of in the last few days and wanted to correct.

What I will say, and I know it’s cold comfort, is that everyone in photos like these has an incredible case against these PDs because the rounds they’re firing say right on the casing that they’re not to be fired except by properly trained users in appropriate ways so either this is a trained person who ignored the training and can be held liable or this is an untrained person whose department should be held liable
They 100% know this is not how these are supposed to be used and they are intentionally misusing them in ways they are aware make the weapons more lethal and will later claim they didn’t know better. They’re lying, and everyone should know they’re lying.

There’s a rather famous case of the effects of Radithor, one
Eben Byers. Byers was an American amateur golf champion who began taking Radithor after injured himself falling from a bed in a traincar. Over the course of two years, it’s believed he consumed about 1,400 bottles of the stuff, believing it gave him a “toned-up feeling” before the extreme weight loss, headaches and the loss of his teeth caused him to stop. When invited to speak to an Federal trade commission about, he was forced to decline due to, as an
investigator from the FTC described in their own words, his “whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth, and most of his lower jaw had been removed”, and that “All the remaining bone tissue of his body was disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull.”
The Wall Street Journal famously reported about his death with the headline “

On this day, 3 June 1943, 200 white sailors in the U.S. Navy headed to East Los Angeles and began to attack Latino and Black children and adults wearing zoot suits. They clubbed youths and any adults who tried to stop them, stripped the boys of their zoot suits and burned their clothes in a pile.
Over the next few days, thousands of servicemen joined the attacks across the US, and were praised by the press, while police arrested the victims of the attacks, rather than the perpetrators and the LA city council even tried to ban the wearing of the suits.
Within weeks Detroit exploded in its worst ever race riots.
Zoot suits at the time were a symbol of primarily Black and Mexican working class pride, defiance and rebellion, and were associated with the Pachuco/a subculture.
