Chinese phones with built-in malware sold in Africa -

news-queue:

Anti-fraud firm Upstream found the malicious code on 53,000 Tecno handsets, sold in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana and South Africa.

Manufacturer Transsion told Buzzfeed it was installed in the supply chain without its knowledge.

Upstream said it was taking advantage of the “most vulnerable”.

“The fact that the malware arrives pre-installed on handsets that are bought in their millions by typically low-income households tells you everything you need to know about what the industry is currently up against,” said Geoffrey Cleaves, head of Upstream’s Secure-D platform.

The Triada malware found by the firm on the Android smartphones installs malicious code known as xHelper which then finds subscription services and submits fraudulent requests on behalf of users, doing so invisibly and without the user’s knowledge.

If the request is successful, it consumes pre-paid airtime, the only way to pay for digital services in many developing countries.

In total, Upstream found what it described as “suspicious activity” on more than 200,000 Tecno smartphones.

According to research firm IDC, Transsion Holdings is one of China’s leading phone manufacturers and in Africa it is the top-selling mobile manufacturer.

In response Tecno Mobile said that the issue was “an old and solved mobile security issue globally” to which it issued a fix in March 2018.

“For current W2 consumers that are potentially facing Triada issues now, they are highly recommended to download the over-the-air fix through their phone for installation or contact Tecno’s after-sales service support for assistance in any questions,” the firm told the BBC in a statement.

It added that it is attached “great importance to consumers’ data security and product safety”.

“Every single software installed on each device runs through a series of rigorous security checks, such as our own security scan platform,” it added.

Common problem

At the beginning of the year, security firm Malwarebytes warned that similar pre-installed apps were found on another Chinese Android phone - the UMX U686CL. This handset was offered to low-income families in the US via a government scheme.

And in 2016, researcher Ryan Johnson found that more than 700 million Android smartphones had malware installed.

Boris Johnson's new Brexit trade adviser is former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has been labeled an 'offensive, climate-change-denying, Trump-worshipping misogynist' -

news-queue:

The Sun newspaper on Tuesday evening reported that Abbott, who served as Australia’s prime minister from 2013 to 2015, would serve as copresident of the UK Board of Trade as Johnson’s government seeks free-trade agreements with countries like Australia, the US, and Japan.

The Australian journalist Bevan Shields reported that Abbott would be an adviser, not copresident. A senior source in Canberra seconded this, telling Business Insider that Abbott would serve in an advisory capacity. There has been speculation about Johnson bringing Abbott into the fold for some time, The Guardian reported.

Abbott is a vocal supporter of Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, having originally advised Brits to vote Remain. He is a popular figure within UK Conservative circles and has spoken with packed rooms of party members at Conservative party conferences.

The UK government revamped the Board of Trade to coincide with the UK’s exit from the EU. Its job is to promote Britain’s status as an independent trading nation to the world as it tries to sign several trade deals in the coming years.

Economists, however, have lambasted Abbott for downplaying the economic risk on of a no-deal Brexit to the UK.

In a column for The Spectator last year, he said a no-deal Brexit would be “no problem” as Australia had a “perfectly satisfactory ‘no deal’ relationship” with the EU. “A no-deal relationship with the EU has not stopped Australia doing about US$70 billion worth of trade with the EU in goods and services,” he said.

Economists pointed out that unlike the UK, Australia does not rely on complex, just-in-time supply chains to import food, medicine, manufacturing goods, and other products from Europe and that UK trade with the EU dwarfs Australia’s trade with the bloc.

A former senior colleague of Abbott in the Australian Parliament said the appointment “is being viewed with bemusement” in Australia given what is widely seen as a lack of credentials to advise on trade.

“Abbott is not a commercial guy, at all,” the person told Business Insider. “He’s a very much a political person. I suspect Boris wants us him to go out there and talk about how great Brexit is.”

YESSSS!!!!!

Lets talk about this.

Absolutely. The Electoral College functions to stand in the way of the will of the people, as expressed through their votes, and who gets into elected office.

“But it’s the basis for the federal government”.

That’s what the fucking senate is there for, Karen.

How to hide from a drone – the subtle art of ‘ghosting’ in the age of surveillance

“The first thing you can do to hide from a drone is to take advantage of the natural and built environment. It’s possible to wait for bad weather, since smaller devices like those used by local police have a hard time flying in high winds, dense fogs and heavy rains.

Trees, walls, alcoves and tunnels are more reliable than the weather, and they offer shelter from the high-flying drones used by the Department of Homeland Security.

The second thing you can do is minimize your digital footprints. It’s smart to avoid using wireless devices like mobile phones or GPS systems, since they have digital signatures that can reveal your location. This is useful for evading drones, but is also important for avoiding other privacy-invading technologies.

The third thing you can do is confuse a drone. Placing mirrors on the ground, standing over broken glass, and wearing elaborate headgear, machine-readable blankets or sensor-jamming jackets can break up and distort the image a drone sees.

Mannequins and other forms of mimicry can confuse both on-board sensors and the analysts charged with monitoring the drone’s video and sensor feeds.

Drones equipped with infrared sensors will see right through the mannequin trick, but are confused by tactics that mask the body’s temperature. For example, a space blanket will mask significant amounts of the body’s heat, as will simply hiding in an area that matches the body’s temperature, like a building or sidewalk exhaust vent.

The fourth, and most practical, thing you can do to protect yourself from drone surveillance is to get a disguise. The growth of mass surveillance has led to an explosion in creative experiments meant to mask one’s identity. But some of the smartest ideas are decidedly old-school and low-tech. Clothing is the first choice, because hats, glasses, masks and scarves go a long way toward scrambling drone-based facial-recognition software.

Your gait is as unique as your fingerprint. As gait-recognition software evolves, it will be important to also mask the key pivot points used in identifying the walker. It may be that the best response is affecting a limp, using a minor leg brace or wearing extremely loose clothing.”

workingclasshistory:

On this day, 27 August 1974, Joan Little, a Black woman, killed a white prison guard in self-defence and escaped from the Beaufort County jail in South Carolina (content note: sexual violence). The guard had threatened her with an ice pick and forced her to perform a sex act, at which point she managed to grab the pick and kill him. She handed herself in to police the following week, at which point she was charged with first-degree murder, which carried an automatic death sentence. Her case rallied support from civil rights activists, feminists and anti-death penalty activists including such figures as Rosa Parks and Angela Davis, and eventually she became the first woman to successfully use resisting sexual assault as a defence for using deadly force.
